Nourishing Meals provides Healthy Gluten-Free Recipes for the Whole Family

By Alisa Fleming on January 21, 2013 Book and Cookbook Reviews, In The News, News, Product Reviews

I vividly remember the day, when we stood around a small table at a friend’s house looking at Ali’s amazingly thick binder of original healthy recipes. “I’ve got hundreds of recipes completed, but haven’t had time to put them all together,” she said. Well, amongst the chaos of her busy and packed household, Ali finally compiled all of those recipes into one amazing cookbook, Nourishing Meals.

To note, both authors, Alissa and Tom, hold degrees in nutrition from Bastyr University. Ali has worked as a personal chef, and Tom travels frequently, speaking at events, and for his work as a faculty member of the Autism Research Institute. They are a powerhouse husband and wife duo of knowledge and good food.

That said, Nourishing Meals starts out with some excellent information from Tom on why the gluten-free diet can benefit your health, a look at the causes of food sensitivities and allergies, how to raise a healthy eater, key nutrients and contributors of deficiencies, and much more.

But after all of the knowledge Nourishing Meals ventures into recipes like these.

Nourishing Meals: Healthy Gluten-Free Recipes for the Whole FamilyDark Teff Sandwich Bread

Nourishing Meals: Healthy Gluten-Free Recipes for the Whole FamilyCreamy Tomato Asparagus Soup

Just a few others that I dog-earred to trial included:

    • Buckwheat Hazelnut Pancakes
    • Healing Ginger Miso Soup
    • Pecan Crusted Chicken and Apple Salad
    • Moroccan Quinoa Pilaf
    • Sweet Potato Falafels
    • Thai Fish Curry w/ Garden Veggies
    • Chipotle Barbecue Sauce
    • Buckwheat Chia Tortillas
    • Maple Pecan Pie
    • Peanut Butter Monster Cookies

In addition to the 300+ recipes, Ali covers the nutritional benefits of soups and stocks, tips for getting your children to eat more  vegetables, charts for soaking and cooking whole grains, and ways to preserve the harvest, including recipes for lacto-fermented vegetables.

Nourishing Meals is 100% gluten-free and rich with so many wholesome recipes and ideas. Though it isn’t completely dairy-free, there are still around 300 dairy-free recipes to choose from. For the recipes that do contain dairy, most are pretty easy to adapt as Ali isn’t heavy handed with cheese, milk, or butter, and she’s certainly no stranger to using homemade almond milk and coconut oil.

Nourishing Meals Now in a Second Edition

In 2016, Ali and Tom switched to a publisher (they self-published previously) and released a second edition of this book. The newer edition is now called Nourishing Meals: 365 Whole Foods, Allergy-Free Recipes for Healing Your Family One Meal at a Time.

It has a new look, and some new recipes, but it still has most of the original content from the first edition.

My favorite healthy food is veggies and roasted red pepper eggplant dip. I try to make my own, but when I don’t have time Trader Joe’s has a great one.

I absolutely love kale…raw, baked, sautéed or thrown in a smoothie 🙂 Greens and bananas are staples in my diet…I love knowing that the food I’m eating is healing and nourishing my mind and body.
