New Jersey Vegan Gelato Company Wins Coveted Sofi Gold Award


GelatoNew York/New Jersey – Blackwell’s Organic Raspberry Sorbetto was awarded the sofi Gold award for Outstanding USDA Approved Organic Product by The National Association for the Specialty Food Trade (NASFT) at the 36th annual Summer Fancy Food Show in NY City. “To be recognized for excellence by your peers is the utmost honor,” said Marcia Blackwell, Founder and President of  Blackwell’s Organic, LLC  “This award is even more significant because it is our first year as a member of the NASFT and our first year as an exhibitor at the show.”

The sofi Gold Awards were presented by noted chef and cookbook author Jacques Pépin, on June 30, during a ceremony at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. The sofi awards recognize excellence in specialty foods and beverages in 32 categories, and are considered a coveted industry honor.

“The winners of this year’s sofi awards are evidence that our members continue to create distinctive products that delight consumers,” said Ann Daw, president of the NASFT. “That is part of why our industry remains resilient in this challenging economy,” she added.

This year’s contest was the most vibrant yet, with a record 2,191 entries. The field was narrowed to 150 Silver Finalists over four days of judging this spring by an independent panel of specialty food experts. Gold winners were selected by more than 400 retailers and foodservice buyers attending the Summer Fancy Food Show, June 29 – July 1, 2008. Winners learned of their honor at the ceremony, where they were presented with a gold statue of a chef. “sofi” stands for specialty outstanding food innovation.

Also at the Fancy Food Show, preceding the awards, owner Marcia Blackwell spoke as part of a panel discussion entitled, “Taking Your Products to the Marketplace”, where Marcia shared “Do’s, Don’ts and Resources” and other secrets to her success,.  Other panelists included Tim Ashman, Ashman Manufacturing Company; Adam Borden, Bradmer Foods, LLC; and Bob Sickles, Sickles Market “2007 Outstanding Specialty Food Retailer”. The Moderator was Marsha Echols, NASFT Legal Counsel.

Marcia also served as part of a panel that explored, “The Impact of FairTrade.”Other speakers included Cate Batson-Baril, Transfair USA and Karen Stevenson, Wholesome Sweeteners.
