Amazing Grass Amazing Meal: Nutritional Protein Powders (DISCONTINUED)

By Alisa Fleming on February 22, 2011 Discontinued Products, Product Reviews

Amazing Meal Replacement Powders were discontinued, but the company still makes Amazing Grass Green SuperFood and Amazing Grass Protein Superfood powders.

I consistently get asked about dairy-free meal replacers, so Amazing Meal nutritional supplement from Amazing Grass was a “must review”.

Amazing Grass Amazing Meal: Nutritional Protein Powders

These powders are not only dairy-free, they’re also raw, organic, vegna and free of gluten, soy and added sugars! I’ve been a fan of Amazing Grass Green SuperFood for years, and was eager to try this mix, but also had fairly high expectations. Fortunately, Amazing Meal delivered.

    Amazing Meal Vanilla Chai

As an initial test, I tasted just a touch of the powder straight. They do use a little stevia to sweeten, and it was a little bit too pronounced for me. Therefore, I knew simply mixing it with water or milk alternative (per the directions) wouldn’t fly. Instead it became the star component of a very basic breakfast shake. My blend contained 1 large frozen banana, 1 scoop of Amazing Meal, and just enough unsweetened hemp milk to keep it thick and spoonable.

Amazing Grass Amazing Meal Nutritional Supplement - dairy-free, soy-free, vegan protein, greens, vitamins, minerals, probiotics and enzymesThough not pretty, the taste and consistency of my Amazing Meal shake was perfect. (Note that the packaging now looks like above, not my picture). The flavors melded beautifully, and the sweetness was a delightful morning treat without being over the top. As a smoothie, this did qualify as a meal for me, and kept me going for a solid three hours without the least bit of hunger.

With just milk alternative, Amazing Meal would only be about 150 to 200 calories. This is definitely not enough to fuel me for more than one to two hours. Nonetheless, if the stevia taste works for you, then Amazing Meal blended with just liquid could work as a mid-afternoon boost or post-workout recovery drink.

    How to Enjoy Amazing Meal

For more Amazing Meal smoothie ideas, I found these visual Apple Pie Smoothie recipes from Amazing Grass. But please reduce the amount of cinnamon in the top recipe down to 1/2 teaspoon. 1 tablespoon is far too much to eat in a serving!

I do think Amazing Meal does offer well-rounded nutritional stats. Each scoop provides 12 grams of protein from organic brown rice, hemp, quinoa and pumpkin seed. The sugars and fat are each around 1 gram per serving, while the fiber clocks in at 4 grams. Amazing Meal also packs in antioxidants and stomach helpers via greens, fruits, vegetables, flax seed, probiotics, and digestive enzymes.

I frequently start my day with a basic banana smoothie, and Amazing Meal was the perfect component to round it out. I plan to enjoy it for many more breakfasts, perhaps branching out into the other flavors … perhaps.

Pleasing in both taste and consistency

I sampled the Vanilla Chai and when mixed into a smoothie, it was very pleasing in both taste and consistency, and the nutritional stats for a solid mini-meal. When mixed with just water or milk beverage, the stevia flavor is a bit too pronounced. Please note that they have reformulated slightly since my original review (I trialed it before they added quinoa and pumpkin seed protein).

How can this be labeled gluten free if it contains wheat grass and barley grass?

Hi Connie, they answer this in their FAQ’s – http://www.amazinggrass.com/faqs/

I have a random question: I work as an au pair for a family and they have recently stumbled upon amazing meal. The mom asked me if we could potentially use Amazing meal to cook with–using it as coca powder or such for some gogi power bars that I make for her. Have you ever tried to do that using the Amazing meal or have you just used it as it’s meant to be in the drinks?
      Thanks!

Kayla, I haven’t tried this, but it could work well. I would keep in mind that the Amazing Meals have protein and are sweet, two things that you won’t find in cocoa powder. I would adjust accordingly. This could work really well in no bake items, but protein powder can be drying in baked goods, and you would want to use less sweetener.
