If based only on taste and texture, we would give these bars a positive 4 stars, but their allergy-friendly goodness, kid-inspired flavors, and support for three great causes (autism, Celiac, and clean water in developing countries), bumps this bar into our 5 star realm.

I discovered these energy bars from Better Batter at a gluten-free expo this year, but it wasn’t until after the show that we got to taste them and learn more about the product.

As it turns out, they are not only gluten-free, but also allergy-friendly – yes, made free of the top eight allergens and in an “allergen-free” facility! But what really sold me on doing a review of these bars was their purpose. Proceeds from each bar go to support a special cause that was chosen by the bars namesake (see below). I ended up recommending them in our product editorial in Allergic Living magazine (spring issue), and wanted to elaborate on my tasting notes here.

Better Batter Gluten-Free Energy Bars

Better Batter is traditionally known as a gluten-free baking mix producer. To add some proprietary flair to their energy bars, each is infused with some of their brownie mix. That said, these are more like “treat” bars – a little on the sweet side, but packed with some healthy ingredients – each bar has a good dose of dairy-free protein (around 12 grams) and gluten-free fiber (about 5 grams).

Each of the bars has a soft and chewy consistency with a smattering of crispy brown rice bits. They are quite filling, even for the adults, but have a delightful kid-friendly tastiness. The biggest kid in our house, Tony, snuck a bar almost daily when the munchies struck. His favorite was the Chocolate Mint – Kylie and I concurred.

Zion’s Chocolate Mint – We all loved the way the bright fresh mint flavor complimented the sweet brownie base. Zion chose to support Autism awareness and research with his flavor.

Caedon’s Brownie Batter – This one has a chewy, sweet, brownie-like vibe that is hard not to enjoy. Proceeds from this bar provide clean water for kids in developing countries

Kaylee’s Chocolate Cherry – The cherry flavor was very mellow, in fact, almost undetectable. We each thought this tasted very similar to the Brownie Batter flavor, and could use a little more cherry to assert its independence. This bar was created to support Celiac awareness.
