Breyers Non-Dairy Ice Cream Goes Big with Four Classic Flavors

    1
By Alisa Fleming on January 6, 2021 Dairy-Free Ice Cream Reviews, Product Reviews

I like it when companies don’t mess around. Breyers doesn’t bother with little pints. They only sell their Non-Dairy Ice Cream in generously-sized, 1.5-quart tubs. That’s the equivalent of three pints, but it’s often sold for the same price as one pint of other dairy-free ice cream brands.

And there’s no reason to hunt around for the flavors. Breyers Non-Dairy Ice Cream is sold at mainstream grocers and it now comes in FOUR over-the-top varieties. Two of them have been available for quite some time. But this year, Breyers has added two more classics to their vegan selection: Mint Chocolate Chip and Chocolate Chocolate Chip.

Breyers Non-Dairy Ice Cream Reviews and Info - Almond Milk Frozen Dessert that's dairy-free, vegan, and sold in large tubs. Now in FOUR flavors.

Breyers Non-Dairy Ice Cream Goes Big with Four Classic Flavors

When Breyers Non-Dairy Ice Cream originally launched, it just slipped onto store shelves, with little fan fare. Despite it’s quiet entry, it’s become a leader in the dairy-free ice cream space. Which is probably why they’re making more noise with the new flavors.

All four varieties are made with a real almond milk based, and spiked with cozy, familiar add-ins. Be sure to leave your own unbiased rating and review below when you try any of these tubs!

    Lactose-Free Flavors are Not Dairy-Free

We receive comments from readers stating that Breyers has dairy-free Chocolate and Vanilla flavors, too. Please note that the Chocolate and Vanilla are Lactose-Free, the are NOT Dairy-Free. They are still made with milk, cream, and whey (and contain casein), but have lactase enzyme added to “digest” the lactose (milk sugar) in the dairy. Those flavors may be suitable for people with lactose intolerance who do not avoid dairy for any other reasons. But they are not suitable for anyone who needs to be dairy-free.

    Mint with no chocolate chips

I was so happy to see the almond milk ice cream, so I bought the Mint Chocolate Chip. The flavor and texture are excellent! I may have exaggerated when I said “no” chocolate chips. There were actually 6 in the whole container! I will be a regular customer if Breyers will please fix this problem. I thought maybe I just got a bad batch. But I’m not alone. I’ve seen many reviews complaining about the lack of chocolate chips.

I have tried them all except the Chocolate Chocolate Chip and I must say I am rather impressed. The calorie count is significantly less than other brands and is a bigger serving size. Also It does not have as much fat as coconut based ice creams.

    More Ice than cream

I tried the Mint Chocolate chip. It tastes more like ice, without any cream flavor. The dark chocolate chips are good, but the “ice cream” part is way too icy and watery. Just completely lacking in any creaminess. Back to Ben and Jerry’s non-dairy.

Competitively Packaged and Priced! But, Not the Worst or the Best Flavor

I about did cartwheels when ,on the way to empty my wallet for a tiny but beyond delectable pint of Ben & Jerry’s non-dairy ice cream, I discovered this nice 2.5 pint of non-dairy ice cream from a well known mainstream brand. It $6.29, it blows well past the other brands out there when it comes to price. Everyone else is a minimum of $5.49 for a pint. Because it was Breyer’s, I had HIGH hopes (but was a little worried about the use of almond milk – coconut milk tends to be better for this type of application). However, this is not at all in the same league as Ben & Jerry’s as far as mouth feel, flavor, “convenceability.” While Ben & Jerry’s non-dairy flavors are indistinguishable from their diary counterparts, Breyer’s definitely taste “non-dairy.” I found the mint flavor in the mint chocolate to be weak. Frankly the flavor is just okay. Not anything to get excited about. I love, LOVE Breyer’s lactose-free vanilla. This mint chocolate chip did not meet my hopes. Would I eat it again? I will try al of the non-dairy flavors, and, after I have done so, if this is all that is available, then yes. Would I choose above other non-Ben & Jerry’s brands? Maybe. Especially due to the cost factor (though Coconut Bliss is better). But, if I lead with my taste buds, price be darned, then no. In that case I’m reaching for Ben & Jerry’s. I hope that Breyer’s improves and stays competitively packaged and priced.
