“We Can’t Say It’s Cheese” Cheddar-Style Dip (DISCONTINUED)

I had planned to go into so much detail about this wonderful product … but I lost most of my notes from the taste-testing. Fortunately, this is one product that is engrained in my taste buds, so I can easily recount much of its deliciousness.

When I cracked open the We Can’t Say It’s Cheese Cheddar-Style Dip, I grabbed a cracker to give it a quick sampling as is. I had expected that I would mostly use this dip in recipes, but before I knew it, I had devoured 1/4 of the tub simply standing there. I later returned with some carrot sticks and cauliflower florets to polish off another 1/4 of the tub. Not wanting to be too greedy, I finally held myself back and reserved the rest to trial out in a recipe the next day.

This product has an awesome consistency – smooth, creamy, and very sour cream-like – which is perfect for dipping (obviously). I loved the bold taste, which could be likened to cheddar cheese in essence. The only caveat is for those who truly dislike nutritional yeast. Super-tasters of “nooch” may want to tread lightly, since I could detect it a bit in the aftertaste. Nonetheless, I consider myself a light nutritional yeast consumer and quite sensitive to the taste (I find many recipes use an overpowering amount), and I enjoyed this cheesy dip immensely.

As for a recipe, alas, I ran out of dip before I could perfect it. I did two trials of a Spelt Cheddar & Chive Roll recipe, but since I was creating this recipe out of thin air, I think I needed a third trial before I could consider it post-worthy. Nonetheless, the flavor was excellent and it did perform well …

As mentioned, this dip has a sour cream consistency, and I found it could easily be subbed for sour cream in recipes … that is if a cheddar flavor is desired.

I also tried the Mexi-Cheddar-Style Dip, which was equally delicious and quite similar in both taste and texture (it was actually used in my second recipe test for those rolls). It just had a generous touch of chili spice to make it standout as a better option for heat lovers. Otherwise, it was pretty much the same … and good!

Free-From Note: I have heard rumor that Wayfare Foods is working on sourcing certified gluten-free oats to make their “cheeses” a good option for many gluten-free consumers too.

Health Note: This dip is relatively low in fat thanks to its oat and bean base, making for a nice guilt-free snack when you do polish off most of the tub!

Additional Product Note: Wayfare also makes a sour cream alternative, but I haven’t tried it. I am assuming they are spot on with the texture, but couldn’t vouch on the flavor since it would be quite different from these dips.
