Forager Project Cashewmilk Yogurt, formerly known as Cashewgurt, is an organic, cashew-based, dairy-free alternative that comes in a solid array of flavors. And unlike many of their competitors, they do offer an unsweetened variety. They also boast relatively short ingredient lists and six different types of live and active cultures.
I’m updating this post in 2020 since they’ve added some new flavors and changed the formula a touch since our initial review. See the consumer reviews below to find out what other think (and leave your own if you’ve tried it)!
Forager Project Cashewmilk Yogurt boasts clean Organic, Dairy-Free Ingredients
When we sampled the Unsweetened Forager Project Cashewmilk Yogurt, I found that it was much milder than Kite Hill’s Unsweetened Yogurt. The cashews provided just enough natural sweetness to create a neutral-tasting yogurt without any overt sweet or sour notes. There is just a very light tang, with a rustic, natural, homemade taste and finish. Consequently, the pleasantly creamy consistency tapered off into a slightly separated aftertaste that was a wee bit watery and powdery. But they might have remedied this with the new formula – it now contains a bit of coconut cream and no cornstarch.

Excellent Non Dairy Yogurt Alternative
No Tapioca starch, guar gum, or pectin in this new and improved Cashew Unsweetened Vanilla Yogurt I’ve just bought. I tried it for breakfast this morning and it’s creamy and delicious! What a pleasant surprise! I wanted a healthy alternative to dairy based yogurt with live active cultures that was without added sugars. Glad I found Forager Cashew Unsweetened Yogurt. It’s creamy from the coconut cream used. Definitely smooth!
they changed it as of October 2023
I searched for whether they changed their formula (I buy the Vanilla sweetened for years) and came upon this post. As of October 2023 they upped the coconut cream (my guess is because people complained it was too runny) and it now tastes awful in my opinion. Coconut in large quantities also makes my have upset stomach. I dumped the entire new container (now $7.69) down the drain.
Gross
I usually buy diary kefir, and another grocery store had this to try… never again. It literally tastes like vomit. Even if I make a smoothie with it, it still tastes rancid. And no, it isn’t past its expiration date.
Strawberry smoothie Sour taste.
I’ve had other probiotic yogurt/yogurt smoothies and this one by far is the grossest at least for me. It does taste like it’s gone bad but it hasn’t. It almost gives you a sour smokey taste like if cottage cheese went bad….or if you had one of those smoker machines to give your bourbon drink a smokey flavor but it’s gone bad taste. Lmao no offense though, I had high hopes but bleh.
Great for puppies with sugar crash ty
My little puppy had a sugar crash and the only thing I had in the house was the cashew your yogurt that my sister eats and I need something to get this puppy out of his crash. I gave it to him within 45 minutes. He was back to being his normal cell. So hurray! Thank you!
Very Good!
I used to eat Fage yogurt which I still love but I went to a plant based diet last year so needed a new yogurt. I found this Forager Probiotic Cashewmilk yogurt today at Central Market. I buy unsweetened plain as I can’t do sugar of any kind, natural or table sugar. I really like it! You can add your own walnut butter or nuts to add a little crunch. Thumbs up!
Unsweet Plain. LOVE IT
Love, Love, LOVE it.
Nice tangy flavor, smooth consistency and a blank slate for me to fancy up.
I add 1 scoop of Flavcity Chocolate Protein and top with bananas or strawberries. Mix it up and I have a great protein filled breakfast!
Changed
When I first bought it, it was great. The consistency was good not too thick not too thin I always buy the unsweetened vanilla unsweetened is my favorite sometimes that is hard to find in the stores. It’s about six dollars a tub. Then they took the starch out of it, and was runny as hell I could not eat it. Then I waited a while and didn’t buy it for a while switched over to kite yeck then I went back to Forager’s vanilla unsweetened and it was thicker again and it had a good consistency again, so I started buying it I eat three times a week with blueberries, and a little honey
Nope! Rotten each time. Will not waste my money anymore
I have bought forager yogurt a few times, the unsweetened kind appealed to me, because I wanted the benefits, but without the sugar. However, each time I have purchased the container is always spoiled upon opening.
In one instance there was visible blue fuzzy mold on the top. This was AFTER peeling away the safety seal.
Forager needs to seriously look into their sterilization, and packaging process. I know the difference between mold and the usual probiotic smell/taste of yogurts,
Great non dairy alternative!
This is an amazing dairy alternative. I’ve had other non dairy brands they weren’t as good. Yes it’s a little “looser” in consistency but I don’t care. I will sometimes put it in the freezer for a few minutes to firm it up. But not sure if it changes the probiotics or not. I like to use it in recipes and for making a healthier mayo and ranch dressing.

What did you do to your yogurt? It does not taste the same to me. Originally you put small bits of fruit in it, which was amazing, but that’s gone too.
It seems like the taste if different, since you also changed your label. Is it just me?
Bits of fruit is better, the original was much better.
Thanks for your products.
Hey,
I like the ingredients, but I see natural flavors. I see all over to stay away from anything that say natural flavors. What is your thoughts on this.
Natural flavors are going to be very hard to avoid if you are buying any type of pre-packaged product, since most do use them. There is controversy about them because, from what I’ve read, the term “natural” is used very loosely and they aren’t much different from artificial flavors. But I haven’t actually read any studies addressing whether “flavors” natural or artificial, are very harmful. So it’s difficult for me to weigh in on.
Nice try, but my tasting of the plain unsweetened reminded me of wallpaper paste. The only non-dairy I found acceptable was the last iteration of Wholesoy shortly before the company folded. That one was actually pretty good. For now, I’ll somewhat reluctantly stick with the Redwood Hill goat yogurt, but continue to taste every non-dairy alternative with hopeful expectation.
Product has very good taste. The texture is too liquid and is not really yogurt like. I’ve also found the product may spoil in the refrigerator prior to being opened and before the date imprinted on the label.
I was looking forward to trying the cashew yogurt, but it is like soup and has no substance. Very disappointed. I won’t be buying this again . Yogurt should not be soupy .
I am wondering if anyone knows how long it can stay unrefridgerated?
I’m guessing not very long. A few hours?
