Forager Project Cashewmilk Yogurt, formerly known as Cashewgurt, is an organic, cashew-based, dairy-free alternative that comes in a solid array of flavors. And unlike many of their competitors, they do offer an unsweetened variety. They also boast relatively short ingredient lists and six different types of live and active cultures.
I’m updating this post in 2020 since they’ve added some new flavors and changed the formula a touch since our initial review. See the consumer reviews below to find out what other think (and leave your own if you’ve tried it)!
Forager Project Cashewmilk Yogurt boasts clean Organic, Dairy-Free Ingredients
When we sampled the Unsweetened Forager Project Cashewmilk Yogurt, I found that it was much milder than Kite Hill’s Unsweetened Yogurt. The cashews provided just enough natural sweetness to create a neutral-tasting yogurt without any overt sweet or sour notes. There is just a very light tang, with a rustic, natural, homemade taste and finish. Consequently, the pleasantly creamy consistency tapered off into a slightly separated aftertaste that was a wee bit watery and powdery. But they might have remedied this with the new formula – it now contains a bit of coconut cream and no cornstarch.

simply the best
this review is for 24oz tubs of unsweetened plain – i haven’t tried flavored ones. it is delicious, tastes just as one i make at home and love, tho the texture of it is much thicker and creamier. i wonder if locust gum does that, because i don’t add that to my homemade yogurt. sadly, i can’t make organic nut yogurt economically, so i’m grateful to have this affordable alternative. my body doesn’t handle food additives well, but this yogurt tastes very clean. it doesn’t seem to have any chemicals “fortifying” it, and i haven’t found any others like it in the market. i like eating it plain as is.
Delicious
Absolutely delicious. I love the flavor (no it is NOT sugary sweet, which is good as far as I am concerned) and the texture. I wonder if there is some genetic different in taste buds in people giving it 5-star vs. 1-star reviews — like loving or hating cilantro. My only complaint is that it’s quite expensive.
Would give zero stars if I could
This review is for the unsweetened plain flavor. I saw it on sale so I thought I would give it a try.
It’s not something I need to try ever again. In fact, it is so bitter as to be undrinkable.
Save your money!
Variation with flavors
I’ve bought the unsweetened version for years, but use it solely for recipes. As many people have said, the taste is a little more sour than most. The consistency is good (never had a watery batch), but the taste isn’t something I love straight up. But I recently tried the blueberry, and it was quite delicious! Unlike many other dairy-free brands, it has a nice yogurt tang. I like that it is sweet and tangy, not just sweet. The consistency of it was on the thin side compared to other dairy-free yogurts I was trying, but still yogurt-like, not watery.
Smells and tastes awful
We tried mixing and diluting this yogurt drink with all sorts of things and it remained terrible. Had a good cashew yogurt experience from Trader Joe’s and figured these drinks would be similar in some way, but there was no
resemblance whatsoever. Tasted like sour curd milk. We tried plain and strawberry flavor. Both went down the drain.
Tastes like skunky beer
I couldn’t even get myself to eat one bite. It is one of the worst tastes I’ve ever experienced.DONT BUY unless you like beer. Then maybe you’ll like it. Yuck!
Delicious!
I routinely buy the Vanilla Bean and also the Unsweetened Vanilla. I am not sure where all the negativity comes from, maybe from people who still also consume dairy products. If that is the case, of course this will not be the same as dairy products in taste. This is one of the best dairy free options, has a pretty clean ingredient list and tastes good. For the unsweetened, you could add coconut sugar, maple syrup or agave to sweeten if you wanted. I eat mine with fresh strawberries and Bear Naked Cacao and Cashew Butter granola which also contains no dairy or other ingredients that I do not want to consume. This is one of the best dairy free yogurts out there, so I do not understand the hate. Hoping to find the Cherry flavor soon, sounds delicious.
Love it
I have been unable to eat dairy for 20 years. This is my favorite non dairy product. Delicious and satisfying!
Not a fan
I have tried different plant-based yogurts — most are relatively mild tasting but there is something off-putting about the plain version, and even when I have mixed it with another type of plant-based yogurt with fruit, the strange taste of this cashew yogurt pushes through.
Change in flavor (very sour and bitter)
I used to love this yogurt so much. The vanilla bean flavor was my favorite. Recently I’ve purchased a few flavors and the taste was very rank and they were not expired.
i had to discarded them that’s how bad they were. A week or two later I purchased more hoping for a different outcome and even purchase from a different store and they still had the same sour rank taste. I’m not sure if they are trying to get rid of the old yogurts by changing the expiration dates or if they’ve changed the ingredients because the taste is unbearable. I’m very saddened by this.

Is the cornstarch non gmo? I tried the vanilla and really liked it.
Hi Theresa, it is a certified organic product, so yes, all of the ingredients, including the cornstarch, are non-GMO. Organic certification doesn’t permit the use of GM ingredients.
I just bought the plain unsweetened at Safeway and it no longer contains cornstarch or natural flavors. (I guess they realized that cornstarch is not “grain-free” since it is made from corn).
I wasn’t a huge fan after considerably trying to doctor the taste. It was okay after adding ripe banana, vanilla, cinnamon and stevia. I haven’t gone dairy-free yet so I probably will stick with my regular greek yogurt, but I can see how it would be nice to have this as an option if I do decide to go dairy-free.
I never purchased non-dairy yogurt before, so I tried this product because it was on sale at Whole Foods, and I loved it. Gradually, I am naturally moving towards a plant-based diet, so I will be buying this delicious product again.
Thanks for your review. I have a couple of concerns with this product, more so the flavored varieties. First, the protein content is extremely low for yogurt. 4 ounces of Cashewgert contain only 2 grams of protein, compared with 11 grams of protein in 4 ounces of real yogurt. Second, the sugar content of the flavored varieties is very high (12 grams of sugar per 4-ounce container), making it comparable to Yoplait. As protein helps to slow the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream, the low protein and high sugar content of this product doesn’t sound very healthy at all. And as you mentioned, it is lacking the nutrients that you would find in fortified products.
I appreciate organic products, but aside from that, there seems to be little nutritional benefit to eating this product. It is more of a pudding/dessert than a yogurt. Soy yogurt may still be the best option for dairy-free yogurt, at 4.5 grams of protein per 4 ounces.
I’ve only tried the Unsweetened Susan, which had no added sugar. As for purpose, I can’t argue you on your protein concerns, but most people eat yogurt for the probiotics, and all of these brands have them. Also, it’s a great alternative for some people in recipes like dips.
I stumbled across this on sale at Whole Foods so I bought a lemon one (because that was the only flavor left on the shelf). Must be the least favorite flavor and now I know why. It tastes like nasty bottled lemon juice. I liked the texture of the yogurt and am willing to give another flavor a try but the lemon one is awful.
Yikes! Thanks for sharing Suz.
I agree – just tried the lemon, as it, too, was the only one left on the shelf. It was so nasty I couldn’t finish it. Not thrilled about the sugar, as sugar negates the benefits of the probiotics. Even with all the sugar (second ingredient), it still tasted horrible. I wouldn’t recommend this yogurt at all.
My son and I have been eating dairy free for a year. A few months ago I spotted this yogurt and gave it a try. It is by far the closest tasting to milk yogurt I have ever had. The plain option so I can cook with it has got me hooked. Had a little scare a few weeks back when Whole Foods didn’t have it in stock for almost 3 weeks! It’s back now and hopefully to stay.
That’s great! I get those “whole foods” scares sometimes too 🙂 Glad to know it is back!
Me too, Whole foods ran out and ate been 2 weeks. Whats up with that and why isn’t this product sold nationwide everywhere…
This is still a relatively new brand and it can be really hard to gain distribution, especially for refrigerated products (cool shelf space is limited!). But you can ask your Whole Foods store about it to ensure they restock.
HAHAHA !! I too had a panic when every Whole Foods around me ran out of it a couple of weeks ago. Being Indian, we use yogurt in many, many savory dishes. My parents are dairy yogurt snobs, looking down their nose at all the dairy-free yogurts I’ve gotten, EXCEPT THIS ONE (plain & unsweetened). I too feel so empowered being vegan with this yogurt. I substitute it in recipes calling for mayo, sour cream, buttermilk, anything creamy. I am trying to eat low fat as well. Mainly I make salad dressing & veggie dip with it .
It’s softer and more drippy than i thought it would be, i had the plain -just bought a small cup because it’s much more in NYC and i’ve had too many terrible nondairy yogurts.
I used it for overnight oats, added 1/3c oats, some chopped walnuts, chopped apple, and cinnamon. This was SO filling it was two breakfast portions even though it doesn’t look like a lot. I added a dribble of honey just before eating since the plain needs that.
I’ll gladly buy more plain next time i’m at the store that sells these. Didn’t see the larger tub
I love these yogurts! Good stuff….have used the pain in baking with good results as well.
Thanks for sharing this Stacy! I hadn’t tried it in baking yet.
I think you have a typo in the first paragraph! “Forager Project has burst onto the dairy-free scene with a huge range ((((or)))) creamy products. Many have looked intriguing, but it was the large tub of Cashewgurt that provoked me to open my pocketbook.”
I think it should say of?
Love your blog anyways!
This is a great in depth review! I must experiment with this!
I have yet to see this one in my local stores. I’m going to ask for it, though. I’m obsessed with cashew milk these days so I know I would love this yogurt!!
If you’re into creamy cashew, I think it will be worth the request Rebecca!
I love yogurt! And cashew yogurt sounds yummy! I can’t wait to try it!
I’ve had the vanilla, strawberry, and blueberry. Fair amount of sugar but so creamy and delicious! Vanilla is easily my favorite, but blueberry is also pretty tasty.
So excellent! Thanks for sharing your feedback on these flavors Martha – very helpful. I think the Vanilla is up next for me.
I need to find this asap! I love the subtle flavor of cashews in “cheeses” so I bet I would love this yogurt!
I think you’d like it Lauren – it seems to work better than almonds in yogurt.
Thanks so much for this information. I have been looking for dairy-free yogurt for a while now. I can’t wait to get this.
Happy to help Trichice!
Love that this comes in a plain flavour! I have yet to find a good vegan yoghurt that isn’t sweetened.
This could be your Holy Grail Sarah!
I like cashew based dairy free foods so I am really excited to try this yogurt!
I will have to look for this. I can’t wait to try it!
Such a great review! Thanks so much for sharing your insight Alisa!
Of course, happy to share about great dairy-free products!
This looks delicious! I just tried this brand’s drinkable yogurt and LOVED it
Good to know, I haven’t tried that yet.
I have been dying to try it out! Love that they have an unsweetened flavor.
Ooh! Cashew Yogurt. I’m definitely giving this a try.
