Beyond IceCream by GoBeyond: Dairy-Free and Low Glycemic (DISCONTINUED)

    4
By Alisa Fleming on June 24, 2013 Discontinued Products, Product Reviews

Unfortunately, GoBeyond went out of business before Beyond Ice Cream really took hold. They’re aren’t any similar ice creams on the market, but check out our Dairy-Free Ice Cream Reviews for dozens of options made with different bases.

In 2016, Omega Creamer rebranded as GoBeyond Foods and changed their dairy-free frozen dessert from Omega Cream to Beyond IceCream. We were told by the company that the formulas remained the same, so our review stands, but the packaging now looks like this …

Beyond IceCream - Dairy-Free & Vegan Frozen Dessert from GoBeyond Foods (formerly Omega Creamery)

This was a tricky product to review. I truly enjoyed it, but Beyond IceCream isn’t your ordinary run of the mill ice cream. Let alone dairy-free ice cream. Your taste buds must be prepared for something unique, different, and even healthy. I would even venture to call this a sweet snack ice cream.

    Beyond IceCream …

Possesses dreamy “healthy” fats. Beyond IceCream is made with a base of flax milk, hemp milk, and brown rice, offering 4400mg of those beloved Omega3 fatty acids. They are even well-balance, outweighing the Omega6 fatty acids by a ratio of over 1.5:1 (yes, this is a good thing!) and offering up some of the secondly adored Omega9 fatty acids (the reason our culture praises olive oil).

Is low in sugar. I adore this. I also liked that it doesn’t have as strong of a stevia aftertaste as so many low sugar, natural products do. It is sweetened with a combination of brown rice syrup, xylitol, coconut sugar, and stevia. Dishing up just 2 grams of “sugars” per serving, and 9 grams of carbs from the xylitol. Personally, this combination worked well for me. I had the satisfaction of enjoying the dessert, without the sugary after effects.

Has relatively balanced nutrients. At just 7 grams of fat per serving, Beyond IceCream nearly meets “low fat” standards. Plus those grams are mostly made up of the “healthy fats” mentioned above. And, get this, each serving has about 2 to 4 grams of protein. Yes, protein in dairy-free ice cream! The total carbohydrates are around 17 grams.

Contains probiotics. Each variety has Bacillus coagulans GBI-30 6086 (a patented probiotic bacteria that has demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects), which stays live since this is a chilled product. To help make those probiotics even more effective, Beyond IceCream also contains natural prebiotics!

Has organic “superfood” ingredients. I can’t say that I’m totally up on the benefits of the various foods used in by GoBeyond, but I doubt it hurts (and probably helps) to have some maca, acai, lucuma, or kava with dessert.

    Tasting Notes for Beyond IceCream

Overall, Beyond IceCream is such a unique product that it really can’t be compared to other dairy-free ice cream products on the market. I love that the flavor is sweet enough to call dessert, but it actually makes me feel good when I eat it! Is it Haggen Dazs? No, but in my opinion Beyond IceCream really is the whole package for a healthy living dessert.

Vanilla Beyond IceCream (aka Stress Release)

Both my niece and I loved the rich and creamy texture and the subtle earthy flavors. The vanilla was ever-present, yet the flavor was unique thanks to the addition of two “feel good” ingredients: kava and noni. By day two, this had become my favorite flavor; on day three, I was deeply saddened when every last bite vanished.

SuperBerry Beyond IceCream (aka Antioxidant Rich Blend)

We both liked this equally creamy variety, but it was so different that we couldn’t begin to describe the flavor. Berry indeed, but there is more to it. Perhaps it was the fact that neither of us had every eaten maqui or elder berries, so it was new to our taste buds.

Chocolate Crunch Beyond IceCream (aka Secret Love Sutra)

My niece exclaimed, “Whoa, that’s chocolate.” At first she said it was too strong, but then after that first bite, she really liked it. I’m still a vanilla girl and this is definitely a dark cacao with quite the “crunch” from sizable whole nuts. Supposedly this is a magic potion thanks to the cacao, suma, maca, and walnuts (who knew?) within.

Hemp Date Nut Omega Cream (aka Rainbow Green Synergy)

Not only is this one green in color, it’s also quite “green” in flavor. My niece did taste it, but proclaimed it “too green.” I agreed at first, but it grew on me with time. Dotted with dates and nuts, I actually started to really enjoy it as an afternoon pick-me-up. A supergreen blend of Spirulina, Chlorella, Nettle Leaf, and Barley Grass offers the naturally-colored hue and some wonderful nutrition.

Passion Hibiscus Sorbet (aka Tummy Tamer)

Only I sampled this flavor, as my niece lacked interest in sorbet. Since I’m not really a kombucha fan (one of the key ingredients) it was kind of unfortunate. That said, it was certainly sweeter and less sharp than drinkable kombucha. It seemed to mellow in my mouth with each bite. In the end, I enjoyed it, but it wouldn’t be my personal pick at the store.

Man I love this ice cream. I used to buy it all the time a couple of years ago until it was discontinued at my local sprouts. I went on their website and all they have is sugar now. WHERE IS THE ICE CREAM? WHERE CAN I FIND IT? PLEASE help me omg.

    Response from Go Dairy Free

Yes, sadly I think they have slowly taken their ice cream and milks off the market. But we’re keeping them on our radar.

Smooth, creamy, rich and yet surprisingly healthy

This dairy-free ice cream has a smooth, creamy, rich mouth feel, yet is surprisingly healthy with probiotics, prebiotics, omega 3 fatty acids, and antioxidants. It also has a low-glycemic and relatively well-balanced nutritional profile. As for the taste, I wouldn’t dare compare it to Haagen Daz, rather it is a more virtuous snack meets dessert ice cream that fills a much needed void for a cool afternoon treat that doesn’t leave you flat. I found the Vanilla rather addictive (while our resident chocoholic loved the super-intense Dark Chocolate), though each flavor had very unique allure.

How did you not taste the stevia in the Super Berry flavor? Better to not be sweet than contain any stevia! Overall, i found the taste tolerable, but could never buy it again.
