I had a sampling of what the Expo West judges tasted and raved about when I attended the Gluten-Free Allergen-Free Expo in Chicago (my brief report here), but when full-sized versions of Hail Merry Miracle Tarts arrived at my door, I thought I’d died and gone to heaven.
Even if you aren’t a raw foodist (I’m a proud member of the hot food-loving club), raw desserts are typically amazing, and Hail Merry Miracle Tarts are no exception. They each possess an almond flour-based crust and are packed with a coconut buttery filling that is sweetly rich beyond belief. They appear petite in size, but are so dense that I found it fairly easy to stick to just one (okay, two at times) serving as a treat (each tart contains three servings).
Tasting Notes for Hail Merry Miracle Tarts
Technically, Hail Merry refers to their Miracle Tarts as a “snack,” which makes sense with the virtuous ingredients (see below). However, these are definitely dessert material in my book, which makes the slightly higher price tag a completely justified indulgence. And, for those with special diet concerns, the tarts are gluten-free, grain-free, and soy-free, in addition to their dairy-free and egg-free nature.
Hail Merry Miracle Tarts come in a variety of flavors; we’ve sampled the following to date:
I love chocolate fudge, therefore I loved this tart. The filling was very rich and dense with a flavor and texture that reminded me of a cross between chocolate pudding and mom’s best holiday fudge. In contrast to the dark chocolaty filling, the crust possessed an almost savory flavor. I loved the texture and instant gratification of the whole tart, but the entire ensemble would hit perfection for me if the relatively thick crust had just a hint of extra sweetness.
This was easily my favorite of the chocolate Hail Merry Miracle Tarts. It was almost identical to the original Chocolate version, but with a perfectly in-tune mint addition. The flavor was seamless. If you love the combination of chocolate and mint, then you will adore this tart.
Chocolate Almond Butter
This tart wins the visual appeal award and an Expo West’s best new product title. Slice it open and you will be greeted with cute Reese’s style wedges. However, these three layers are far healthier than those of the traditional peanut butter chocolate cups. The top layer is that chocolate fudge I keep raving about, the middle is a dense almond butter that seemed to be unsweetened, and the base is their signature cocoa almond crust. Truthfully, this one was more of a snack, since the base crust and the almond butter were both on the savory side. I really enjoyed it, but it didn’t rank as highly as the other tarts for me.
Holy lemon shebang. This tart was shocking, but out-of-this-world delicious. Honestly, I could have eaten the crust alone, it was so amazing! It was rich with coconut, and it possessed a sweeter and more buttery flavor than the Hail Merry chocolate crusts. The lemon filling was firm, but more pudding-like than the others, and the tart wasn’t filled quite as full. Which turned out to be a good thing since the sweet lemon flavor packs a powerful tart punch. Even though I’m not a huge fan of lemon, I couldn’t help but fall head over heels for this unique treat.
