The moringa provides unique "green" undertones to the overall flavor of these date-based bars, but the Dark Chocolate evens the playing field with pure, sweet goodness. Based on the price and the sugars, this is more of a "treat" than an everyday bar in my book, but the wholesome, simple ingredients and nutritional benefits from the moringa and nuts make it a truly nutritious indulgence.

I’m not usually one to jump on the superfood bandwagon, but when something pops up that I think has merit, I’m certainly not going to ignore it. The latest to capture my attention was moringa, as used in Kuli Kuli Superfood Bars.

Tasting Notes for Kuli Kuli Moringa Superfood Bars

The creators of Kuli Kuli were spot on when generously labeling their bars with the word “nourishing”. This not only describes the ingredients, but also the taste of all three new flavors in my opinion …

Crunch Almond

The title is a bit misleading as this Kuli Kuli bar isn’t really crunchy at all. Rather soft and date-based with sizable bits of almond throughout. It has unique “green” undertones in the taste for an earthy yet mild flavor vibe. It spikes with sweetness at times. While I love the short ingredient list, I think a pinch of salt and some warm spices should replace the agave for more overall depth and lower sugars (my taste buds thought the dates would be sweet enough alone).

Black Cherry

This one has the same consistency as the Crunchy Almond, soft and nutty, but with chewy cherry infused throughout. I liked the pure and unmistakable fruit flavor that made this one a little more of a standout – especially for cherry fans.

Dark Chocolate

Okay, they won me over. While chocolate might seem like a given for our favorite, I’m often not a fan of chocolate-flavored energy bars. But these are very treat-like with nice dots of semi-sweet chocolate that permeate the overall taste of this bar. In fact, I was surprised to read that it contains cherries, too!

I wavered between 4 and 5 stars on these Kuli Kuli Super Food Bars, but what finally tipped the scales for me was that dark chocolate flavor (a solid 4.5 stars) and the way they were able to incorporate so much moringa (a notably green-tasting super food; sustainably sourced from women’s cooperatives in West Africa) while maintaining and pretty good flavor profile. What makes moringa so special? Well, for those of us on a dairy-free or even a vegan diet, it incorporates with the almonds to offer a wonderful balance of bone-boosting minerals.

Here is what each Kuli Kuli Super Food Bar provides with only whole food ingredients:

  • Calcium (25% of the RDA)
  • Iron (10 to 25% of the RDA)
  • Vitamin A (25 to 30% of the RDA)

Due to the slightly higher price and added agave sugars, I wouldn’t reach for a Kuli Kuli bar everyday, but do consider it to be a wholesome and nutritious “treat”.
