Mauna Loa Macadamia Milk Ice Cream says Aloha to Frozen Dessert Fans

By Alisa Fleming on September 2, 2021 Dairy-Free Ice Cream Reviews, Product Reviews

One of Hawaii’s iconic producers has rolled out the first macadamia nut-based, dairy-free frozen dessert. We heard rumors about it a couple years ago, and a re-launch last year. But now Mauna Loa Macadamia Milk Ice Cream has finally found it’s place in freezer cases across the country. Their collection includes several island-inspired flavors, and a touch of tropical coconut cream for richness.

Their line-up of pints includes seven decadent flavors. Usually, I would head straight for the creamiest in the bunch, but classic Hawaiian flavors like Mango Liliko’i and Strawberry Guava should not be passed up! But once you’ve bought and tried any of these pints, be sure to leave your unbiased rating and review below!

    It's white; it's smooth

I’ve been to Mauna Loa’s macadamia nut groves on Oahu. Their nuts, like the scenery are amazingly smooth, with a mouth-feel that’s hard to beat. The faux ice cream I just tried is similarly quite astounding. True the macadamia style, it’s white. There is virtually no flavor (in the ‘vanilla’ variant) A more innocuous dessert offering would be hard for me to imagine. Just the thing if you’re in recovery, eating only plain. cream-O-wheat, I’ll have to try a flavor to get a flavor I guess.

The taste and smell reminded me of good coffee shop cold drinks without the dairy. I will be trying other flavors

I tried the Kona Coffee and although it’s a rich dark brown color, there is no taste of coffee coming through. Can’t recall when I’ve been more disappointed in a product.

    We really liked this

Six people, all differing tastes, only two who don’t eat dairy. Everyone loved the texture, which was a little icy, but in a different, pleasant way – like a cross between ice cream and shave ice. The vanilla orchid was a big hit, everyone liked the flavor, which was slightly floral, not too sweet, and played nicely with the macadamia flavor. The mango liliko’i was pleasantly sweet and fruity. We couldn’t overtly taste the liliko’i, but there was definitely a different element at play beyond the mango. I would buy again, with a bigger sale. Full price in my area, it’s way out of budget. On sale, it was worth trying, but still a little too pricey for me to justify buying regularly (it was $6.99 on sale in our town).

    Overall good flavors

We tried chocolate & strawberry guava. Both had nice clean flavors, not too sweet and love that there is no strong coconut flavor. The only issue we had was that it is really hard to scoop, so we had to microwave it on low in order to scoop it.
