Last month I received a surprise gift in the mail: a super-cute convenient snack pouch and a selection of Navitas Naturals Superfood Bars.
I actually hadn’t heard of these bars before they showed up, but after reading the ingredient label and sampling each, I thought they had some great potential and were worth a review.
All current varieties of Navitas Naturals Superfood Bars have a perfect chewy, granola-bar texture. They’re soft, tender and not-too sticky, but have crispy bites and big nut chunks of interest throughout. The nutrition statements read similarly on all with 4 to 5 grams of protein and 9 grams of sugars. They have a moderate amount of naturally occurring fat and are a higher carbohydrate snack. As for the flavors …
Goji (Tangy Berry Acai Nut Bar) – This was the first variety that I tried and those big nut chunks against the tender, chewy, crispy backdrop really won me over. That said, the flavor was okay, but had several “off” notes that I detected. There was a somewhat sharp sweetness followed by a quite bitter aftertaste that overwhelmed at times. Overall, it just didn’t taste cohesive. I tend to be very sensitive to bitter, so if you aren’t, this might go unnoticed, and those pleasant underlying acai flavors might hit the spot.
Hemp (Creamy Peanut Hemp Nut Bar) – This blend was much more my speed with a wonderfully fresh peanut flavor. However, there was still a slight polarity problem. It started off with a pleasant sweetness, but then bursts of overly-sugary notes would pipe up. I think it could use just a little more salt and/or spices to tame and bring the flavors together.
Maca (Sweet Maple Maca Nut Bar) – This was perhaps my favorite of the Navitas Naturals Superfood Bars. The earthy, malted taste of the maca was noticeable and it danced beautifully with the naturally rich maple. My taste buds warmed up to the mild sweetness, but just a bit more salt would make the flavor really pop, in my opinion.
Cacao (Tart Cranberry Cacao Nut Bar)  – I’m not a big fan of chocolate snack bars, but the tart cranberries did play nicely with the rich, permeating cocoa flavor. I think many chocoholics would love this one as it’s perfectly sweet and has an overall taste that’s just barely full-bodied enough.
Certifications: Navitas Naturals Superfood Bars are Certified Organic and Certified Kosher Parve. They are labeled as gluten-free, but we didn’t note a certification for this.
Dietary Notes: By ingredients, Navitas Naturals Superfood Bars are dairy-free / non-dairy, egg-free, gluten-free, grain-free, and vegetarian. Most varieties are made without soy (they use chocolate with soy lecithin in the Cacao) and without peanut. All of the Navitas Naturals Superfood Bars contain honey, so they aren’t strictly vegan. Nonetheless, always read the ingredient statement and check with the company on their manufacturing processes for all varieties if potential allergen cross-contamination is an issue for you. Processes and labeling are subject to change at any time for any company / product.
