O’My Dairy-Free Gelato Celebrates 8 Purely Indulgent Pint Flavors

    0
By Alisa Fleming on February 14, 2020 Dairy-Free Ice Cream Reviews, Product Reviews

When I think of special diet companies that do it right, O’My Dairy-Free Gelato is one of the first to come to mind. Their rich, flavorful vegan ice cream is made with just 5 to 8 ingredients. It’s close to homemade, but perfectly whipped for a professional finish. Ice cream scoops glide with ease – straight from the freezer!

O’My Dairy-Free Gelato initially launched a little over a year ago with six flavors. Later in the year, they launched a seventh flavor, Strawberry, and now they are releasing a party-ready flavor, Cake Batter. Lucky for you, we have full details on each variety.

Please note that the nutrition facts for the new Cake Batter flavor are for a 2/3 cup serving. The other flavors are for a smaller 1/2 cup serving. I’m including some of our notes with each flavor, and my own review in the ratings section for the flavors that we’ve sampled. If you’ve bought and tried it, don’t forget to leave your rating and review below. It helps others!

    Chocolate

This simple recipe is highlighted by fair-trade certified, organic cocoa powder. They also add a touch of vanilla to help keep the coconut base from overpowering the flavor.

    Vanilla Bean

We’re hoping the coconut flavor is modest, since this variety is infused with both Madagascar Bourbon vanilla extract and real vanilla beans.

    Mint Chip

Something about mint and coconut just works together. And it helps that this ice cream is spiked with fair-trade certified, organic, dairy-free chocolate pieces.

    Coffee Chip

The simple ingredients don’t tell you that this flavor is made with organic, single-origin coffee and crunchy organic, fair-trade certified, dairy-free chocolate pieces.

    Orange Cream

This creamsicle-inspired flavor is smartly bolstered with both orange juice and pure orange extract. I’ve learned from making ice cream at home that the orange extract is almost a must for the right blend. And they seriously nailed it with this delicious ice cream! It’s my personal favorite from the O’My collection.

    Strawberry

No added flavors are needed in this 5-ingredient blend that’s made with pureed organic strawberries.

    Cake Batter

This sweet flavor is definitely worthy of a celebration. It’s a newer formula that isn’t quite as soft, rich, and creamy as their other flavors, but has a more playful side.

    Root Beer Float (Discontinuing)

A root beer flavor without caramel color! We wish it was also infused with some real root beer, but beggars can’t be choosers.

O'My Dairy-Free Gelato Keeps its Cool with 6 Simply Creamy Flavors - all vegan and allergy-friendly. Just 5 to 8 ingredients each.Ingredients: coconut cream, water, cane sugar, natural root beer flavor, carob gum.*

    Additional Allergen Note*

O’My is an allergy-friendly brand that makes every effort to keep their product safe. Here is what they state:

Because ice cream is produced at the same facility, at the end of every production run, equipment is thoroughly washed, rinsed and sanitized. The rinse water and equipment are tested to detect these proteins: Dairy, Wheat/Gluten, Eggs, Soy, Tree Nuts, and Peanuts. These tests must be negative, and if they are not, equipment is recleaned and sanitized until a negative result is achieved. Once all of these steps are complete, we start making our dairy free gelato!

    Very good but still searching

I have been on the hunt for a non-dairy alternative for Coffee Chip. While this is tasty, creamy and has the requisite dark chocolate chunks I like, it has a little too much coconut flavor and too light of a coffee flavor for me. It is passable, but still searching for one that has a robust, intense coffee flavor, with chocolate chunks! (Think Trader Joe’s Coffee Bean Blast with dark chocolate chunks added! – that in a non-dairy formulation would be HEAVEN.

Remember "ice milk? .... yea.... I tried to forget it, too.

Though the coffee chip flavor is good, the consistency is very icy. I find it quite ironic that O’My labels itself “gelato” and it isn’t even nearly as creamy as other vegan ice creams. As I scooped it, it actually flaked into my bowl. The second ingredient in every flavor is WATER. Who makes gelato with water?

    Response from Go Dairy Free

It sounds like the coffee is icier than most of their flavors! I know the water ingredient can be confusing, but whole milk (used as a base for gelato) is actually 87% water. If companies broke the milk down, the first ingredient on most ice creams and gelatos would be water. Water is what makes all foods fluid (including milk and cream) and is needed to blend with the base (coconut in this case) to make a churnable liquid. I hope that helps to explain!

    Did I get a dud?

I got the Coffee Chip and the flavor was good but the texture was neither creamy nor soft. It was like it was made with water. It was like a coffee Italian ice.

    Response from Go Dairy Free

We haven’t tried the Coffee Chip, so I can’t say for sure on that flavor. But the ones we have bought – including the Mint Chip and Orange flavors – we definitely on the creamy side. The Mint Chip in particular was quite creamy. The Cake Batter was a little more sweet than creamy.

    Healthy and delicious!

We tried the vanilla flavor (the best gauge of an ice cream, IMO). It was very good – super creamy with a milk coconut flavor. We will definitely be buying this again.
