Planet Oat Oatmilk has always been a low sugar brand, and most of their flavors have “no added sugars” (see note below). But a few grams of sugars are produced in the processing of the oats. So they’ve launched two new “Unsweetened” varieties that each contain zero grams of total sugar to help meet every need.
When Planet Oat Oatmilk was first released, you might have thought this was a fledgling company, but it is produced by HP Hood. They’re a $2 billion, 170-year old dairy, and one of the largest food and beverage companies in the U.S. Like so many other dairy producers, HP Hood jumped into the fast-growing, non-dairy market. But unlike many of their competitors, it looks like they got it right the first time. Planet Oat Oatmilk has been met with rave reviews for it’s creamy consistency, fortification, performance in coffee, and naturally low-sugar taste.
Planet Oat Oatmilk Doubles Down on Low Sugar with New Unsweetened
Aside from the dark chocolate, all of the Planet Oat Oatmilk varieties are made without any added sugars (see note below). As mentioned, an enzymatic process used to make oatmilk (so it isn’t goopy like homemade versions!) breaks some of the carbohydrates down into sugars. So they aren’t sugar-free, but do not have any sugars added to the ingredients. Now, somehow, Planet Oat has managed to remove those last traces of oat sugar in their new, sugar-free, unsweetened varieties. And like their other flavors, these cartons are also generously fortified with vitamins and minerals.

Added Sugar in Planet Oat Oatmilk
It looks like some in-store cartons are now showing 4 grams of added sugars in the Extra Creamy, Original, and Vanilla varieties, despite no change in the total sugars, formula, or information on Planet Oat’s website. There was a ruling that oat milk companies must disclose “oat sugar” created during the production of oat milk (they use an enzymatic process that breaks some of the oat down into simpler carbohydrates), as added sugars. We assume that’s why cartons in store seem to have “added sugars” now. So technically, there still aren’t any types of sugar added to the formula, but sugar is created in the processing.

So good!
So I tried Planet Oat Original for the 1st time due to a promotional free coupon and I am hooked! I’ve seriously been back to my fridge 4 times for another refill. It’s perfectly sweet with a light oatmeal taste and not too thick. Definitely will purchase!
Vegan
Tastes great. Where do the vitamins come from? I dint know if this product is truly vegan.
Response from Go Dairy Free
The product is made without any dairy and marketed as vegan. If you need to know vitamin sources, you will need to contact the company.
Sooo good!!
I have tried all of the available products from Planet Oat now and I am hooked! I love that I can just drink the milk or have it with something. The frozen dessert (ice cream) is amazing!! And the coffee creamer is perfect (other brands left sediment at the bottom of my coffee, but Planet Oat is creamy and smooth). Love, love, love.
finally something that doesnt taste like watered down house paint
as close to milk as you can get when you cant drink the real thing
Good on Cereal
I like the unsweetened vanilla flavor on my bran flakes, but drinking by the glass, the smell is reminiscent of Play-Doh. Thankfully, it tastes nothing like Play-Doh.
Bad
Tried it in my coffee. It tasted horrible. My coffee was basically black. I will never buy it again.
Best tasting
It’s more creamy than all of the other milks. Great taste and reasonably priced. My favorite!
Mostly water
I bought 2 half gallons of Planet Oat Milk. I had bought it before and it was fine. The last 2 half gallons tasted and looked like water be careful what you buy.
Why is shelf stable Planet Oat brown color?
Have had fridge Planet Oatmilk many times. White and good consistency. Tried shelf stable for first time. Light brown and very thin, like brown water, no matter how much I shook carton. Why the difference? Shelf stable is Original, no cane sugar or flavors added.
Response from Go Dairy Free
Probably due to the processing. Natural oat milk is brown, thin, and watery. They use enzymatic processes to turn it into a creamier liquid. It sounds like this was done well for that batch.
Never again!!
I tried Planet Oat Extra-Creamy in my coffee for the first time today. Not only did it not turn my coffee cream-colored, but it curdled!! The taste was fine, but the appearance was gross!! I would never drink a concoction like that on a regular basis, much less serve it to my guests!! Just so you know, the product was not expired or even close to it, and I thoroughly shook the container before pouring.
