You know the dairy-free industry is booming when stores come out with their own brand of dairy-free cheesecake! Loblaws has launched a whole line of plant-based convenience foods, including President’s Choice Vegan Cheesecake Style Dessert. And in 2020, they added a second flavor!

Since they also released dairy-free cashew dips, I expected this plant-based cheesecake to be cashew-based. But it actually appears be nut-free, and free of most top allergens (aside from wheat)! Based on the ingredients, it looks like it is made with Wayfare cream cheese alternative. When you try this cheesecake, don’t forget to leave your rating and review below!

    Threw it away!

First off, you need to defrost it for 90 minutes, then you have a window of about 10 minutes to consume, otherwise the consistency goes from “I imagine this is what cheesecake feels like in my mouth” to instantly dissolving on your tongue like cotton candy. Flavour? Sugar. That’s it, a big mouth full of sugar. Was tolerable in the semi-frozen state, but my girlfriend tried her slice past that magic 10 minute window, and the look on her face was utter disgust and contempt. Thinking she was being dramatic, I tried her slice and agreed.

Dense texture, sweet, and just a wee bit tart – like a cheesecake should be. Add some cherry or cherry/cranberry pie filling to add some more tart flavour and you’re in dessert heaven.

    Sugar Cheesecake

    Rated 2 out of 5
    August 11, 2019

I thought I’d give it a go based on the “creamy and tart” description right on the box, but it tastes like pure sugar. Although I love fudge & chewy candy which are almost pure sugar, I hate it when people use sugar to mask tastes. It needs more acidic flavours, specifically lemon. I am not vegan or vegetarian, so I am not sure why I felt drawn to try this. The ingredients are listed weirdly: the “dessert base” is the FIRST ingredient. Inside the dessert base ingredient brackets, cultured dextrose and blue agave syrup are the 8th & 9th. The SECOND ingredient is “sugars”. Inside its brackets, there are sugar and corn maltodextrin. The THIRD ingredient is “graham crumbs”. Its brackets also contain sweeteners: number 3 is sugar, number 5 is blackstrap molasses. There seems to be a big effort to disguise their excessive use of sweeteners. I googled “What does 36 grams of sugar look like” and found that 40 is a mountain. I think I will throw the cake out even though it tastes okay…beyond the sugar taste issue.

As someone who has made cheesecakes for for more than four decades,

I was duly impressed. In fact, more than merely duly impressed, I was as

the British say, “ gobsmacked “ with its authentic cheesecake like flavour

and texture. So far, four of these amazing cheesecakes have been purchased

and consumed. My freezer has a new set of companions, boxes and boxes of

this wonderful dessert. Along with President’s Choice frozen, four

berry blend fruits as a luscious topping accompaniment, I am ready for any guest, for a short stay or longer. After tasting this totally decadent dessert,

one would imagine they’d opt for a longer stay. Now that I will not be baking my own, there will be more time to spend planning fun summer activities. Thank you to all the bakers in the President Choice Cheesecake kitchen. Kudos to each of you. ?

After having tried dairy free desserts in the past that did nothing but disappoint and trigger my gag reflex, I didn’t have high hopes for this vegan cheesecake going in. Colour me surprised! It’s SO GOOD!! Do yourself a favor and give it a try – you may thank me later. 🙂
