Rawcholatl Organic Ancient Aztec Cacao Spice Drink (DISCONTINUED)

    0
By Alisa Fleming on November 11, 2014 Discontinued Products, Product Reviews

Rawcholatl  has been discontinued, but Righteously Raw is still around and making other chocolates. They still make their Raw Chocolate Truffle Bars, Raw Chocolate Bites, and Coconut Macaroons. For other hot cocoa options, see our Dairy-Free Hot Chocolate Guide.

This could be one of my favorite “treat” finds of the year. Rawcholatl isn’t cheap (what is these days?), but it is an amazing, healthy dairy-free beverage experience.

This gourmet, raw, nutritious delight has full-bodied flavor that truly needs just water. So many dairy-free chocolate drinks require a creamier base to excel. Rawcholatl does taste good with dairy-free milk, but it really isn’t necessary. The rich cacao with depth from mesquite powder is punched up with intense warm spices and tempered with subtle sweetness. In fact, this unbelievably flavorful chocolate drink contains just 4 grams of sugar per 2 tablespoon serving, and just from organic coconut sugar. I confess to adding a few drops of vanilla stevia when enjoying Rawcholatl warm to reach my personal taste nirvana. Which brings me to another point: how to enjoy.

Cholatl Ancient Aztec Cacao Spice Drink by Righteously Raw - Dairy-Free, Organic, Vegan

As the name implies, Rawcholatl is indeed a raw food. And though pure in flavor, it is a surprisingly fine powder that merges into both warm and cool water. I used it as a big flavor booster to smoothies: 1 tablespoon gives a punch of spice with just hints of cacao in a frozen banana smoothie, while 2 tablespoons is a whammy of flavor. But I still loved it most “warm”. I put that in quotes as they recommend on the website to serve it at 106ºF. This was a little too lukewarm for me, so I admit to preheating the water to 120ºF. Still not hot, so hopefully I wasn’t killing off too much nutritional goodness, but just right for my heat-loving body.

Beyond the certifications noted below, Rawcholatl is made in a dedicated gluten and nut-free facility. I believe it is also a vegan facility, but check with them to verify, particularly where severe food allergies are a concern.

    Price: $12 per 7.6-ounce container

Certifications: Rawcholatl is Certified Organic, Certified Vegan, Certified Kosher, and Non-GMO Verified.

Dietary Notes: By ingredients, Rawcholatl is dairy-free / non-dairy, egg-free, gluten-free, grain-free, nut-free, peanut-free, soy-free, vegan / plant-based, and vegetarian. Nonetheless, verify on the label and check with the company on their manufacturing processes for all varieties if potential allergen cross-contamination is an issue for you. Processes, ingredients, and labeling are subject to change at any time for any company / product.
