Europeans are quite familiar with dairy-free heavy cream. Most of their natural food stores carry several varieties. But in North America, we’ve been limited on options. For decades, we’ve relied on coconut cream and homemade cashew cream in recipes, but some store-bought choices are beginning to emerge. A couple of years ago, creamy Carnation Almond Cooking Milk popped up, and now Silk Dairy Free Heavy Whipping Cream is entering the mix.
This thicker, but pourable blend is made for cooking, baking, and whipping, and it’s been silently sneaking onto refrigerated store shelves.
Silk Dairy Free Heavy Whipping Cream is Making a Stir
Unlike most dairy-free cream, this ready-to-pour carton isn’t filled with coconut cream. Instead, it’s a stabilized emulsion of oils and waters that’s made without top allergens, and is even pea protein-free (for those of you with cross-reactivity from peanut allergies). But it still contains coconut!

Unusable after first use
First time we opened it, it poured out great. By the next day or two, it was not pourable at all. Just a thick mixture like soft margarine. I had to squeeze it out. Since it was for a sauce we still used it as it was not expired, and it tasted all right. Just weird that it congealed after one use and within two to 4 days of opening.
Tasteless and disgusting
Whipping cream?? False advertising. I whipped it and it looked like watery curdled milk with NO taste. Water has a better taste than this product and it’s not a curdled mess. Thankfully I had a real replacement of whipping cream on hand or the desert would be ruined. ICK, ICK ICK!
Amazing
In my coffee, on my fruit- actually I could almost drink this it is so good. Now I’m having trouble getting my local Safeway to stock it. Best cream ever!
Love this product.
I whip this and add vanilla and a bit of superfine sugar. It is fantastic with fresh berries. I did find that it solidified after the first use. Just put some water and vanilla in it and shook it really well and whipped with a hand beater.
So delish
As long as you chill the silk heavy cream, your bowl and beaters for at least 2 hours, and then do not over beat, you will have perfect whipped heavy cream every time. So many other recipes to use in, I am so thrilled to have found this product!!
Goes Solid
I love this product when it is first opened. After only a couple of uses it goes to a solid form. Totally unusable at that point. I contacted Silk and they said “That’s the first time we have ever heard that!” Yea right.
Does not whip
This product gains a tiny bit of volume but whips up (using heavy duty professional mixer/whipper) into something resembling cheese curd. It simply does not whip into anything close to a “cream”. It also begins to separate almost immediately. Utter failure as a substitute for whipping cream. This product may work well for baking, but for the purpose of whipped cream is a bust & a total waste of money.
This is the best tasting and texture alternative to dairy whipping cream I have tasted.
This is the best tasting and texture alternative to dairy whipping cream I have tasted. Even my dairy drinking father likes this product. I can not digest dairy; and this works fantastically in sauces and desserts. It is the same price as dairy based heavy whipping cream. So, not a bigger burden on my budget. I have found so many dairy alternatives that taste like coconut sun tan lotion smells. This one does not. It does separate; but so does heavy cream. One would shake a can of spray whipping cream to get it ready for use, too. So, not a big deal. Thank you Silk for making this product! I wish more stores would carry it!
Sometimes Clumpy Sometimes Not
I would have given 5 stars, but I value consistency above all. When spending close to $5 for something, I don’t like the fact sometimes it stays smooth & creamy for the entire use & other times, it clumps up & I don’t know if there is something wrong with it. I would really like to know because I’m close to not buying it again & rolling the dice.
Clumpy
I like the taste, however, as soon as I open it and use it once, it solidifies in the carton. Very frustrating.
