Dreamy is the word to describe the consistency of this coconut milk-based ice cream. The more simplistic flavors do have distinctive notes of coconut (i.e. Chocolate and Vanilla), but the bolder selections drown out these undertones with coffee, peanut butter, or tropical fruit. As coconut fans, we enjoyed the mono-lined flavors and had a true appreciation for the natural intensity of the Coconut flavor.

One of the best dairy-free creations (ever!) has to be coconut milk ice cream. The coconut averse may not agree, since hints of coconut can sometimes be detected (read on for our flavor notes), but it’s hard to argue the creamy consistency of coconut-based frozen dessert. Especially So Delicious Dairy Free Coconut Milk Ice Cream! It easily rivals premium dairy ice cream and simply cannot be matched by other types of dairy-free ice cream alternatives.

So Delicious Dairy Free Coconut Milk Ice Cream - Cookie Dough

It’s apparent that many others agree, as the popularity and availability of coconut milk ice cream is skyrocketing. In fact, So Delicious Dairy Free seems unstoppable with new recipes. What started with just five delicious dairy-free coconut milk ice cream options, quickly expanded to eight, and is now nearing twenty different flavors of coconut milk cream. Perhaps they have plans to become the 31 flavors of vegan ice cream?

We’ve barely scratched the surface, touching on the Gluten-Free Cookie Flavors in a separate review, but will update here as we trial more flavors. Also, feel free to share your So Delicious Dairy Free Coconut Milk Ice Cream favorites and tasting notes in the comment section below.

So Delicious Dairy Free Coconut Milk Ice Cream - Over a Dozen Decadent Flavors

Though I would normally reach for the vanilla flavor first, I found myself bowing to my chocoholic husband’s cravings for our initial taste test of So Delicious Dairy Free Coconut Milk Ice Cream. The scoop slid with ease through what must be one of the creamiest non-dairy ice creams available. After shoveling several perfect, parlor-worthy scoops, Tony reached for the first bowl, and almost immediately proclaimed, “It tastes like a coconut fudgcicle!” He was so right; I really couldn’t imagine a better description. The taste was pure, creamy, soft, flowing, and rich in cocoa, but with that definite coconut backdrop.

I peeled back the lid of the vanilla pint to discover the purest shade of white I had ever laid eyes on in an “ice cream.” Most vanillas are a bit yellowed, but this looked like a cloud of whipped cream with natural vanilla bean flecks; definitely inviting.

The vanilla had the same wonderful texture as the chocolate, but it was a bit softer. Literally melting on my tongue, it was also a luxurious mix of creamy and refreshing, not the least bit heavy, but oh so smooth. Just as it looked, the texture was also reminiscent of whipped cream. Gone are the days of icy hard dairy-free ice creams!

Yet, I never realized how coconut, coconut milk really is until I tasted this vanilla. I would hesitate to call it just vanilla, but rather I might rename it vanilla-coconut. Both flavors equally shared time and united in the spotlight.

Noting a mild coconut flavor in both the chocolate and vanilla, I was curious how they would make the actual coconut flavor really stand out … but it did! This one is for true coconut fans (such as myself) or someone seeking to create that perfect pina colada. Though a bit thicker than the vanilla, it was still insanely soft and creamy, with giant shreds of coconut throughout! There was no tainting with those pesky vanilla or chocolate flavors, the So Delicious Coconut, Coconut Milk Ice Cream is just that, coconut with coconut added. I loved it! The purity was so wonderfully inviting.

Passionate Mango

Sweet, sour, and silky smooth; what hit with a mild shock to my taste buds, quickly melted into a luxurious blend of natural goodness. The initial, tangy passion fruit vibe gave way to a mellow and sweet mango flavor. This ice cream version offered the refreshing taste of a sorbet, with just a hint of rich indulgence from the creamy coconut milk. This treat gets two thumbs up and is absolutely perfect for hot summer days (when a rich ice cream may feel just a bit too heavy), or as an after dinner treat.

Mocha Almond Fudge

Just a word of caution: I don’t like coffee. Not a bit. What about mochas you ask? Nope. The bitter flavor that is coffee has never had a place in my kitchen. But, I was still compelled to taste as many coconut milk ice cream flavors as possible. It is my duty as a dairy-free author after all.

This coconut milk ice cream flavor most certainly has a very bold coffee flavor. So present in fact that I immediately wondered if this frozen concoction might offer a jolt of caffeinated energy. But, as it melted and mellowed atop my tongue, I warmed to the complex flavors. The texture was smooth and rich with generous chunks of nuts throughout and a subtle fudgy swirl that added a sweet, yet intense, chocolate syrup vibe. Coffee and mocha lovers shall rejoice, but even this coffee novice was drawn back for seconds.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl

Vanilla is always my first choice over chocolate, but I have yet to turn up my nose at a bowl when offered, particularly if the phrase “peanut butter” is found in the title. Could there be a better marriage than chocolate and peanut butter? I think not.

The peanut butter flavor seemed mild, not standing on its own, but rather merging with the chocolate for a different sensation. I really enjoyed this decadent flavor. I can only eat chocolate desserts in small amounts, and this intensely chocolate ice cream was no exception. Large chocolate slivers were scattered about, which were the perfect touch.

Overall Notes

Unlike the Vanilla, Chocolate and Coconut, we detected nary a hint of coconut in the Passionate Mango, Mocha Almond Fudge, and Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl flavors. We also found all to have a texture that was pure, rich luxury without a touch of iciness.

Also, So Delicious Dairy Free Coconut Milk Ice Cream (formerly known as Purely Decadent Made with Coconut Milk) is fairly simplistic in ingredients. Made with just pure organic coconut milk, agave, and all-natural flavor additions and thickeners rounding out the list. Plus, they have a nice handful of certifications, as noted below.

  1. I am diabetic and vegan. I had given up eating anything resembling ice cream until I discovered So Delicious. When I eat it I get to have a guilt free treat. The Mint Chip is my favorite but I’m happy with the chocolate or vanilla also. I’ve heard there is butter pecan sugar free but it’s not stocked at Sprout’s where I shop.

  3. I am really surprised by the positive comments. That their ice cream taste great, whether it’s regular sugar or the sugar free, yes it is very delicious.

What I didn’t count on was the extreme, and I mean extreme, inflammation that I got after eating their products. It was so bad that I couldn’t bear it. I looked up their ingredients list and lo and behold it had Carragean. I had no idea. Please do your own research, don’t trust me, but look up what Carragean is and what it does to your body. I had read about the effects of Carragean but didn’t really believe it until I experienced it firsthand. Now I know that it is an ingredient in which many organic products have as a preservative but it is highly inflammatory. Your body can’t digest it and I experienced it firsthand. Beware.

I know the people at this company are doing their best but they should really Heed the findings of how BAD Carragean is for you.

  4. Just a warning to not eat too much like I did! It’s very delicious and a wonder option for dairy allergies.

    • Hi Nika, you would need to contact the brand directly and discuss their manufacturing processes to decide if you consider a product safe for your daughter. I can’t advise on this.

  5. This ice cream is so good. I have had several different flavors, Chocolate, Vanilla, Mint, Cookie Dough, Cherry Amaretto, and Cookies and Cream. Every flavor I have tried has been excellent. My favorite flavors are the Cherry Amaretto and the Mint, but that is just my preference. One of the only things that makes this dessert different from non-dairy ice cream is that I have to set it out for 5-10 minutes before I eat it to soften it slightly. This is one of the best dairy free desserts that I have had.

  6. Deborah Moore on

I think it’s named well ” frozen dessert” because it’s good but I don’t really get ice cream, maybe ice milk but really it’s just a good, cold, expensive! treat. I had cookie dough and I’ll try another.

  7. the coconut is very good but extremely sweet. If you love extremely sweet then this is great. If you love little sweet you may find it too sweet. Very smooth and great quality.

  8. I was nursing and had to go diary free. I was so bummed to give up ice cream then I found this ice cream. Its amazing and satisfied my craving!

  9. i tried the chocolate flavor and it was amaaaazing, i cant wait to buy some more! I am so glad that this non dairy icecream is also soy free. I love everything about coconuts 😀

  10. My wife (allergic to whey) loves the chocolate variety. She was so depressed when she was diagnosed, until she found this ice cream.

  11. Had to go dairy free for the baby and was so happy to find a cow’s milk alternative ice cream that was actually well, really good! The chocolate flavor is my favorite and I found it to also be the least coconut-y of the bunch, too.
