SooFoo Organic Multi-Grain and Lentil Blends (DISCONTINUED)

Soofoo went out of business, but you can find other side dish options in our Dairy-Free Rice & Pasta Dish Reviews.

I admit it, rice mixes are handy and often super tasty, but most of the flavored varieties contain dairy and/or undesirable ingredients. Though I have migrated away from these conveniences over the years, it was neat to discover SooFoo earlier this year.

Unlike your ordinary run of the mill Uncle Ben’s, SooFoo is certified organic (yes, this means non-GMO), vegan, made with all-natural USA-grown ingredients (no additives, preservatives or artificial anything), and it contains not one, not two, but NINE whole grains and lentils. Each mix includes a blend of barley, black beluga lentils, brown lentils, buckwheat, green lentils, long grain brown rice, steel cut oats, rye berries, and yera cora rojo wheat berries.

SooFoo Organic with Rice Cooker 2

SooFoo comes in four varieties, and the chefs at SooFoo don’t tread lightly with flavor. The Original is the simple earthy blend listed above, no additional ingredients required. It is a nice texture mix once cooked, with soft lentils and nutty wheat berries asserting their presence. But the Garlic & Herb quickly steps things up with a blend of spices, tamari and even dried tomato. The Hint of Curry was more like a forceful nudge – quite bold, yet pleasant and rich. The Moroccan Medley was a bit too spicy for my taste buds, but definitely flavor infused.

The flavored varieties certainly hold their own, and even pack a nice little dose of protein and fiber, but the Original begs to be used in recipes, and there are no shortage of those. The SooFoo website is loaded with recipes, from Pilafs to Pestos, Sloppy Joes to Soups. Click the image below to enjoy the feast.
