We’ve been waiting for Trader Joe’s to make the official announcement, but it seems they’re letting this dairy-free product release linger for a while. Trader Joe’s Vegan Sour Cream is already in stores, and waiting to top your enchilada casserole. It’s reportedly thick, refreshingly rich, and nicely tangy. Perfect for sauces, dips, baking, or topping that dairy-free baked potato. We have all the details for this savory new condiment below.
Trader Joe’s Vegan Sour Cream is a Cool Coconut-Based Alternative
It’s not dairy, but it is a little tart, a touch tangy, adequately thick, and quite creamy. And we think it will work well as a sour cream substitute on your favorite Mexican dishes, stirred into dips, baked into cakes, and more. But be sure to leave your own rating and review below once you try it.

Hard top, weird consistency
I came on here to check if other people experienced the same thing. And I guess it’s not just me. When I opened it, it reminded me of full fat coconut milk that is not creamy, but has a hard shell on top. I was thinking it was bad but it wasn’t. I checked the date on the sour cream and it was ok as well. I was thinking it may have the same effect as the full fat coconut milk, because it is made of that, I stirred it and gave it a try. It seemed ok. I added it to gluten free cornbread. My family loved it, except my daughter, who thought it
had a weird flavor. And it made my tummy hurt. But I’m having digestive issues so I don’t think I’m ready for processed foods yet. I just wanted to say something so they can improve that texture.
Very hard shell
I opened my container and went to stick my spoon in and there was a very hard solid layer on top. Couldn’t even hardly push the spoon in. So I started storing it for several minutes it did get creamy but still seemed like it had hard chunks in it. I checked the date which was hmgood. I couldn’t get paste the consistency and the hard shell on top so I decided not to taste it and returned it to Trader Joe’s.
Great in artichoke recipe
Awesome taste and consistency in a baked artichoke dip — Love this as I’m trying to focus our fat intake on MTCs and this is based on coconut oil. Could be a life saver in recipes.
Major Separation!
So I’ve been reading other reviews to see if this is normal, but apparently it’s not. I thought maybe the coconut oil cooling could cause this but now I’m a bit concerned. The liquid and solids in my sour cream were completely seperate upon opening and stirring together didn’t seem to fix the problem. The texture is just too weird to get past so I can’t really comment on flavor. I’m very disappointed as I had very high hopes for this product! Now I don’t even plan to eat it.
Really delicious!
Taste so similar to the real thing, works even better as a vegan cream cheese base!!
Tastes extremely thick and offputting
So excited about this, but it tasted nothing like sour cream and was a different texture too. Very think, minimal flavor, and very disappointing.
TJ’s miss
I typically enjoy many foods from Trader Joe’s, but this alternative sour cream missed the mark. With following a dairy-free diet I’m understanding when the options aren’t identical to the original. However, this sour cream is just not good. It’s bland yet at the same time has a pungent taste that is trying to mimic real sour cream. I even tried mixing it with hot sauce and it was still subpar.
Wonderful alternative
I have tried so many alternatives and some are ok, some are terrible and none gave the experience of sour cream. This one made my vegan taco night feel like it should. I loved it
