Grasshopper Cocktail to Add Dairy-Free Cheer to Your Celebrations

By Alisa Fleming on December 28, 2018 Beverages, Dairy-Free Recipes

The holiday season is winding down, but New Year’s Eve is still on the horizon. And I think 2019 will give us many more reasons to celebrate. So fill your glass with this festive dairy-free grasshopper cocktail and raise it with a cheers to the year ahead.

Creamy Grasshopper Cocktail to Add Dairy-Free Cheer

A grasshopper cocktail is a sweet adults-only drink that is named for its green color. It’s flavored with crème de menthe and crème de cacao for a chocolate-mint treat. Despite their names, “crème de” liqueurs aren’t actually creamy, and they are typically dairy-free and vegan.

Crème de liqueur is a syrupy alcoholic beverage that’s sweetened with sugar and infused with flavor, like mint or cocoa. But you don’t want to confuse it with “cream” liqueur, which usually contain dairy. You can see my Dairy-Free Alcohol Guide for more details.

But grasshopper cocktails are usually made with part dairy cream, too. I use coconut milk to make dairy-free grasshopper cocktails. Coconut melds very well with mint and chocolate. But if you don’t like coconut, you can enjoy the coconut-free option below!

    Special Diet Notes: Grasshopper Cocktail

    By ingredients, this recipe is dairy-free / non-dairy, egg-free, gluten-free, nut-free, peanut-free, soy-free, vegan, vegetarian, and optionally top food allergy-friendly.

For a coconut-free, dairy-free grasshopper, you can substitute cashew cream (the “regular” version) for the coconut milk. This goes especially well with the Minty Mocha variation.

This classic drink is easily dairy-free. Garnish it with a simple mint sprig, or rim the glass with crushed chocolate sandwich cookies like Oreo, Joe Joe's, or Kinnikinnick (for gluten-free).

    Serves: 1 cocktail
    Ingredients
    • 1 ounce white crème de cacao
    • 1 ounce crème de menthe
    • 1 ounce regular coconut milk (shaken, from a can; can sub lite coconut milk for a lighter drink)
    Instructions
    1. Put the creme de cacao, creme de menthe, and coconut milk or cashew cream in a cocktail shaker with some ice.
    2. Close, shake, and strain into a cocktail glass to serve. Shake all ingredients with ice, strain into a cocktail glass, and serve.
    Notes
Minty Mocha Variation: Reduce the crème de menthe to ½ ounce (can sub white creme de menthe for no green hue) and add 1 ounce coffee liqueur (such as Kahlua).
