Dairy-Free Oreo Mug Cake with Just 3 Ingredients and 5 Minutes

Some online recipes seem like more trouble than they’re worth. Pancake cereal, anyone? But some are so simple, so perfect, you wonder why no one ever thought of them before. Yes, I’m talking about the Oreo mug cake, made internet famous on TikTok. Greater than the sum of its parts, this dairy-free Oreo mug cake is better than many others I’ve tried, and it’s a whole lot easier.

Dairy-Free Oreo Mug Cake with Just 3 Ingredients and 5 Minutes (or Less!)

Oreos are the default dairy-free cookie in my social circle, so I usually have some around. This is a fun way to use up leftover cookies. It’s also an easy way to make a dessert for a child who can’t eat the sweets being served.

The flavor is good but very sweet; I add a dash of salt for balance. Most recipes online call for more milk, but I like less milk for a thicker batter. I provided a range of milk measurements, depending on how gooey you like your cake and how big your mug is. The range of cooking time depends on your microwave and mug size.

    Wait, Oreos are Dairy Free?

To the pleasant surprise of millions of people who’ve cut out dairy over the years, Oreos are naturally dairy-free. Their chocolate coated varieties and a few other types contain milk. But Classic Oreos and most of the Oreo flavors are made without any milk. There are other brands of dairy-free sandwich cookies, like Newman-O’s and many generics.

Kids Can Cook this Easy Vegan Dessert, Too!

This is a great Kids Can Cook recipe. It’s made in the microwave with prepackaged ingredients. And smashing the Oreos in the milk is fun!

Special Diet Notes: Dairy-Free Oreo Mug Cake

    By ingredients, this recipe is dairy-free / non-dairy, egg-free, nut-free, peanut-free, vegan, and vegetarian.

We haven’t tried this recipe with gluten-free sandwich cookies, but it might work! Please let us know if you do try it, and if it holds up.

I'm addicted to this gooey chocolate cake made with classic chocolate Oreos. But I'm sure it would be good with any of their flavors. What if you made it with one of the Oreo cake flavors - like Carrot Cake or Birthday Cake?!
    Author: Sarah Hatfield
    Recipe type: Dessert
    Cuisine: American
    Serves: 1 serving
    Ingredients
    • 6 Oreo cookies
    • ¼ to ⅓ cup dairy-free milk beverage (use the lesser amount for a gooier cake)
    • Dash salt
    • Dairy-Free whipped cream for topping, optional (I used Redi-Wip Almond)
    Instructions
    1. Put the Oreos in a microwave-safe mug.
    2. Pour the dairy-free milk in the mug.
    3. Using a fork, mash the cookies in the milk until a uniform "batter" is formed.
    4. Microwave for 60 to 90 seconds.
    5. Top with dairy-free whipped topping, if desired.
