Twenty New Dairy-Free Foods: 2010 Expo West and Beyond


So Delicious Coconut Water Sorbet - Dairy-Free and VeganTo even attempt to identify ALL of the new products unveiled at Expo West 2010 would be futile. Even so, we have gathered together as many relevant new product announcements as we could unearth from this mega natural food show, in addition to some new products we have recently received announcements about via email.

So Delicious Coconut Water Sorbet – As mentioned last week, this one was given a VegNews "Best of Show" award, so I am sure it is quite tasty. It is fat-free, made with organic coconut water, sweetened with fruit juice, and pictured above.

Boku Super Protein – This protein powder blend is made with the following ingredients: Organic Sprouted Brown Rice Protein, Organic Coconut Organic, Vermont Maple Syrup (dehydrated), Organic Acacia Gum (soluble fiber), Organic Fine Vanilla Bean, and BōKU® Super EnzymesTM (Amylase, Protease (3 different potencies), Bromelain, Cellulase, Lipase, Alpha-galactosidase, Papain). One 3 Tablespoon serving of this vegan blend contains a whopping 26 grams of protein and is reportedly high in calcium, Vitamin C, and Vitamin A.

Omega Cookies – These new dairy-free, gluten-free (made with certified gluten-free oats), fiber-charged cookies are also rich in Omega-3's (2000mg per cookie), calcium (35% of RDA per cookie), and Vitamin D (200% of RDA per cookie). The ingredients are far from vegan (contains fish oil, egg whites, honey, and vitamin D3), but this is truly a powerhouse cookie for nutrition buffs.

Rising Sun Farms Oil Free Balsamic Dressings & Marinades – This new product line is 100% natural, fat-free, gluten-free, and dairy-free. The dressings come in Pomegranate, Lemon Thyme, and Raspberry. This brand is widely distributed in the U.S., so you should see these dressing on store shelves locally quite soon.

Yogavive® Apple Chips (new sweet and savory varieties) – In addition to their current lineup of Original, Cinnamon, Caramel, Peach and Strawberry, Yogavive® Apple Chips will get even sweeter with the introduction of two new sweet flavors, Chocolate and Vanilla. Plus, they are adding a whole new line of savory apple chips: Cheddar, Ginger, Barbecue and Garlic. Their news release states that their products are certified organic and vegan, so we assume this means the new cheddar variety also, but as usual, be sure to check the ingredients.

Maranatha Nut Butters – Owned by the natural food mega-corp Hain Celestial, this food division is gradually spreading their product line, one nut butter at a time. They already have some chocolate varieties as well as a few richer options, like macadamia butter, but for Expo West they went back to the basics with these two new selections: Almond Butter with A Hint of Sea Salt and Sunflower Seed Butter with A Hint of Sea Salt.

2 Moms in the Raw Granola Bars –   First Sea Crackers, then Granola, and now Granola Bars … there seems to be no stopping these two entrepreneurial moms with a passion for good quality food. Raw foodist or not, their products sound delicious.

Rudi’s Gluten Free Bakery – Rudi's Organic Bakery has been churning out good wholesome bread products (all dairy-free) for five years, but at the show they announced that they were also venturing into the gluten-free market. The new gluten-free product line will include an original sandwich bread, multigrain bread and cinnamon raisin bread, and will be nationally available starting in July 2010.

Amy's Gluten-Free Chocolate Cake & Rice Mac & Cheeze – We mentioned these two [hopefully] fabulous products previously, but they reportedly made their tasting debut at Expo West. Both are of course dairy-free, otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned them. If the gluten-free chocolate cake is even close to as good as their vegan chocolate cake, then I am sure it is a winner.

Van's 8 Whole Grains and Lite Waffles – I was unable to confirm which selections would be dairy-free, but Van's is a good allergy-friendly company (and it looks like the 8 whole grains selections may be gluten-free), so they should be clearly marked. Their organics line is also getting reformulated, so keep an eye on those labels.

Eastbluff Trading Company Cacao Tea – The folks at VegNews claim that "this fragrant tea is like sipping melted chocolate."

Gardein Mandarin Chick'n Crispy – With Tal Ronnen as their spokeschef, Gardein has been going nuts with new varieties of vegan entrees (both fresh and frozen). The Mandarin Chick'n Crispy was chosen as a "best of show" selection by VegNews tasters.

Justin's Chocolate Hazelnut Butter – This is the first company we have spotted to package up nut butters in convenient single-serve packs – brilliant! They are quickly expanding their product line to include honey and chocolate nut butters, including this hazelnut butter, which won a Best New Vegetarian product award.

Kaia Foods Kale Chips – This is another one that we announced pre-show, but it is now official – these crispy new kale chips were deemed delicious by many tasters at Expo West. They should be in stores and available at the Kaia website soon.

ReVitaPop – A gluten-free, casein-free, organic and vegan lollipop that is loaded with vitamin B12. Interesting. Their website claims "maximum absorption" and each pop boasts 60,000% of your daily B12 requirement. That should take care of that one major vegan supplement requirement with ease.

Daiya "Cheese" Shreds for Retail – The company is at last going retail, with their shredded mozzarella and cheddar products ready to head to stores. Daiya reportedly melts (for real!) and is free from the top allergens.

Tofurky Frozen Pizza – Are you ready for this? A whole line of dairy-free and vegan frozen pizzas. Yes, you read this correctly. There will be three selections (to start), and hopefully more to come. Each of the frozen pizzas will be topped with the above mentioned Daiya cheese alternative and two of the varieties will feature Tofurky meat alternatives (including pepperoni!).

Hemp Bliss Organic Hempmilk – Manitoba Harvest finally unveiled the new look and taste of the "only certified organic hempmilk." We are looking forward to a taste test on this one!

Dr. McDougall's Instant Asian Entrees – Thinking beyond their instant soups, Dr. McDougall's has some Asian-inspired noodle entrees coming out that are microwave-ready. A good option for lunches I am sure.

Annie's Bunny Graham Snack Packs – This is one product I have trialed and loved … Annie's Bunny Grahams, available as chocolate, chocolate chip, cinnamon, honey, and even gluten-free bunnies. The newness comes in the packaging. Annie's is now offering the honey bunny grahams and the "friends" bunny grahams (a combo blend) in lunchbox friendly snack packs.
