Dairy Free Made Easy – “A comprehensive guide”

"Page Turner" is not usually a term you'd use to describe a cookbook or lifestyle guide, but that's exactly what "Dairy Free Made Easy" is.  Like a good mystery, this comprehensive guide to diary free living was filled with one "ah ha!"  moment after another. Alisa Marie Fleming brings you the insider scoop on dairy, and all the havoc it can reap.   From the revelatory chapter on "The Many Faces of Non-dairy Dieters" (thanks for the info on "acne and dairy!), to the excellent "Dining Out With Diary Free Style", to the encyclopedia-like  "Grocery Shopping: Over 2000 Non-Dairy Products", this book continuously impressed me with its thoroughness, and helpful timely advice. “This book is a godsend.  Easy to read, and it answered all of my questions.  There are some great recipes for dairy substitutes (milk, cream, cheese, etc.) and some regular recipes for things like cookies and mac and cheese (essentials in my house!).  But this is more of an all around information book than a cookbook.  It is full of health information, grocery shopping ideas, what-to-eat tips, and “how-to” suggestions for cooking and altering my own recipes.

As a mother of four, cooking isn’t always a joy.  I really liked the product lists included in this book.  They helped me to find some dairy-free AND healthy convenience foods that fit into our diets.  No more duncan hines and wonder bread, yeah!  This book is also great for anyone looking for information on calcium.  I have been concerned about my kids not getting enough, but now I have a better idea of foods and supplements that will help.  Cutting out the milk definitely helps with my headaches and I am hoping will resolve the ear and sinus infections my kids have.” – Jennifer, Salt Lake City, Utah

What readers may most appreciate, however, is the way in which Ms. Fleming makes it abundantly clear that giving up dairy is very "doable," and will not result in a lifetime of bland, boring food. The book includes long lists of general suggestions for dairy-free dining both at home and at various types of restaurants, and a somewhat overwhelming 84-page listing of dairy-free products by brand name (with the chart also noting if the product is available online, and whether or not it is also gluten-free, soy-free, vegan, Kosher, and/or made on dedicated dairy-free equipment).

Although the book is not written from the standpoint of managing a life-threatening dairy allergy (as Ms. Fleming points out in the chapter on dining out, "The severely allergic must always take extra precautions"), as a food allergy author I still found lots of useful information here." – Linda Coss, Food Allergy Author
