Eat Like a Dinosaur is a Recipe & Guidebook for Paleo Kids

By Alisa Fleming on March 28, 2012 Book and Cookbook Reviews

Paleo is all the rage these days, and two of the trendsetters leading this healthy movement are the Paleo Parents. They’ve transformed their own bodies (lost over 200lbs) and transitioned the health of their children (now free from asthma, eczema, allergies, and behavioral issues) by switching to a whole foods, meat and veggies lifestyle. And now they’ve written a family-friendly book about it: Eat Like a Dinosaur: Recipe & Guidebook for Gluten-Free Kids.

Eat Like a Dinosaur Paleo Cookbook Review, Info & Sample RecipesBut for my readers, I think what is most exciting about their cookbook is that it is actually dairy-free. Even though the Paleo diet is dairy-free in theory, many variations, including Primal, allow grass-fed butter, cream, and even cheese.

Unfortunately, many paleo and primal cookbooks take full advantage of this “allowance” tossing cream and cheese into every other recipe. But in their new book, Eat Like a Dinosaur, the Paleo Parents keep it milk-free (a few recipes have butter as an option, but a dairy-free alternative is also available), and very, very simple.

What’s Inside Eat Like a Dinosaur

The recipes in this collection are anything but fancy – easy, everyday, and wholesome are words that come to mind – but it really is so much more than just a cookbook. I would describe Eat Like a Dinosaur as a “healthy family food book” that covers the basics.

    It includes …

… a “how to” chapter for parents and “projects” to get the family spending time together.
… an illustrated kids story to help get kids excited and thinking positively about embracing food changes
… over 100 recipes and projects which are grain-, dairy-, legume- and refined sugar-free.
… a bright, fun color layout that is fully illustrated. After all, who doesn’t like dinosaurs?
… an easy to read food allergy index in the back that covers the top 8 allergens.

    Top Allergen Notes

Just a quick note on the allergen issue – the entire book of recipes is suitable for dairy-free, gluten-free, peanut-free, and soy-free, but they do use nuts and eggs in some of the recipes. If you confuse eggs with dairy, you aren’t alone. See my egg post to help clarify.
