When a major news site like Reuters announces, “Dairy-Free Demand Soars”, I can’t hide my happiness. More awareness, more options, and at last, the major chains begin catching on to the rising trend that is important, even essential for so many of us. The breaking story: Starbucks has announced that they will be adding coconut milk to all 12,123 U.S. shops as of February 17th.
According to Starbucks, “providing a non-dairy alternative to dairy and soy is the second most requested customer idea of all time.” Yes, of ALL TIME. On their customer outreach platform, MyStarbucksIdea.com, it generated more than 84,000 votes. Not too surprising as the research firm Euromonitor International expects U.S. retail sales of dairy-free, soy-free milk beverages to nearly double to almost $2.4 billion over the next four years.
The new creamy option is certified vegan and will be labeled as Starbucks Single Origin Sumatra Coconut Milk, in reference to their coconut source from the tropical Indonesian island of Sumatra. Starbucks’ research has tested it as the best free-from milk beverage for creating dairy-free hot, iced and Frappuccino® beverages.
It appears that Starbucks will continue to offer soymilk along with the new coconut milk introductions, and for both dairy-free options they will keep their standard 60 cent surcharge.
