Be Free Co Delivers the First Dedicated Dairy-Free Subscription Service

In our fast-paced society, food delivery can be a godsend, especially for special diets. Unboxing a surprise package curated specifically for your needs is truly a gift. That’s why I was so excited to learn about Be Free Co. They are the first subscription box created specifically for the dairy-free consumer.

The founder of Be Free Co hand selects dairy-free snacks, goodies, pantry items, meal helpers, and more each month. She then ships them directly to each customer’s door with no delivery fee. It takes the hassle and guesswork out of trying new products, and makes discovering new foods fun. Be Free also offers a dairy-free and gluten-free box, and they have more options on the way.

I wanted to learn more about Be Free Co, how they select products, and what’s in store, so I interviewed the founder, Tasha Rickard.

Why Did You Start BE FREE CO?

Be Free Co is an idea and a dream created completely and solely for children. When my daughter was 4 years old and my son was just 4 months old, they both developed severe eczema and rashes covering almost the entirety of their tiny bodies. I just knew in my heart that they both had an intolerance or allergy to something.

It was confirmed through extensive allergy testing and food challenges that both of my children were severely allergic to dairy. The world my family had known was thrown right out of the nearest window.

Over the next 5 years my children became completely dairy-free and mostly gluten free, and I became an expert at shopping for safe foods my family could actually eat and enjoy. Once word got out that I was an all-star at managing restrictions, people from all walks of life started coming to me for advice.

That’s when I had an epiphany, my ah-ha moment. What if I could use my research to provide a beautifully packaged delivery service for all these people? I decided to create something that would help people discover the whole world of amazing dairy-free brands – just like my family had.

What Makes BE FREE CO Boxes Special?

I’m a little biased, but we really do offer so many unique things.

    • We let you discover foods that you may not have seen before, because we frequently partner with brands that aren’t readily found in grocery stores.
    • Our boxes land right on your doorstep each month, so you don’t need to drive all over town looking for new dairy-free foods to try.
    • New foods are delivered each month. They always change, so you are constantly experiencing different options.
    • The shipping is always free on pre-paid subscriptions. What you see is what you get with our pricing.
    • Subscriptions include exclusive access to our dairy-free online community and cookbook, and we often source bonus allergy awareness merchandise for the boxes.
    • My family tests and approves the foods for each box to help ensure that you receive only the best products.
    • They’re always dairy free! We read the labels for you and do our own due diligence with the companies.

Are the Foods in BE FREE Boxes Safe for Dairy Allergies?

I do verify for cross-contamination practices. If it isn’t already stated on the package or company website, then I will call the manufacturer to learn about any practices they have in place to prevent cross contamination. The companies I use don’t always have dedicated lines, but I do like to hear that they have cleaning and testing practices in-between product changes and that they make every effort to ensure product safety as much as possible.

Editor’s Note: It’s important to realize that there is never a 100% guarantee of allergy safety in food manufacturing. “May contain” warnings are voluntary and often used improperly. A “may contain” statement or lack of statement does not mean the product is safe or unsafe. Always conduct your own due diligence to ensure that a product is safe for your needs before consumption.

Why Did You Decide to Offer a Dairy-Free, Gluten-Free Box Too?

As my Be Free journey began to unfold, I realized that many of my friends needed to be dairy-free and gluten-free. I wanted to create an option for this part of my community since they are even more restricted.  When I released the dairy free and gluten free option the demand became even more apparent. It’s now our most popular box!

What’s Your Experience with Gluten-Free Products?

My children are not allergic to wheat or other gluten grains, but my daughter is sensitive to gluten. I can tell a difference in her skin rash, eczema, and inflammation when she has eaten too much gluten. So my family has transitioned to a mostly gluten-free diet, and I’ve gained knowledge in sourcing gluten-free products.

    Are the Gluten-Free Products Certified?

In our dairy-free and gluten-free package the products are either certified gluten free or labeled gluten free.

Editor’s Note: The FDA regulates the term gluten-free, regardless of certification. If a product is labeled gluten-free it must have less than 20 parts per million (ppm) of gluten.

Do You Have Any Other Dietary Subscriptions Available?

We just launched a vegan box and a vegan gluten-free box! I follow a vegan diet mid-week, and understand that many people like me want the opportunity to try more plant-based foods. These boxes will be tailored to include foods that adults and kiddos will enjoy.

Who are BE FREE Boxes for?

It’s an amazing service for anyone who is just starting on their free-from journey, or who is more experienced but wants to get out of a food rut. We accommodate everyone from busy parents of kids with dietary restrictions to adults with an allergy, intolerance, or desire to lead a healthier lifestyle. Be Free is such a great way to discover new foods every month without all of the searching and uncertainty!

You can order anytime from the 1st to the 31st of a month to receive the next month’s box. It ships the first week of the month. For example, if you order anytime between August 1st and August 31st, you will receive the September box in the first week of September.

After selecting your dietary plan of choice, you can opt for a one-time box to try it out or a subscription. We have a pay-as-you-go monthly option and discounted 6-month or 1-year memberships.

I think this would be perfect for college students or graduates out on their own for the first time. What a great care package this would be to receive each month when you’re away from home!
