    VeganSun Artisan Non-Dairy Cheeses (DISCONTINUED)

    0
By Alisa Fleming on October 14, 2014 Discontinued Products, Product Reviews

VeganSun Artisan Non-Dairy Cheeses have been discontinued, but there are many other options on the market. To see vegan cheese alternatives that are currently available, see our Dairy-Free Cheese Alternative Reviews.

Remember what you used to think of when the words “dairy-free cheese” were uttered? Well throw those preconceived notions out and enjoy a new generation of cheese alternatives with brands like VeganSun. Made purely with a base of organic raw cashews, water, Himalayan salt, and non-dairy culture. Their aging process creates pungent, deep flavors that can often seem missing in a dairy-free diet.

    Tasting Notes for VeganSun

VeganSun is a little delicate, but can hold its own when sliced into wedges. The wedges are marvelous for nibbling and vegan cheese platters, but it also crumbles marvelously, much like a soft Parmesan. VeganSun comes in a delicious-looking range, but thus far, we’ve sampled the following dairy-free cheese rounds from their somewhat sizable selection:

    Spirulean Aged Artisan Cheese

Just one little, healthy ingredient is added to this VeganSun variety – spirulina (blue-green algae) – but it adds such a delicious, fresh, well-rounded flavor. Naturally tangier than most cashew-based cheeses that I’ve trialed. Each wedge is filled with bright savory notes that offer satisfying pungency. I enjoyed nibbling on a wedge of Spirulean VeganSun on its own, but it’s also amazing crumbled atop salads.

Smoke & Spicy Aged Artisan Cheese

VeganSun Artisan Non-Dairy Cheeses - Aged and Handcrafted Cashew-based Cheese Alternatives #dairyfree

The brilliant red-orange hue that peppers the outside of this variety is your first clue that bold and spicy lies ahead. This variety has crushed red pepper and chipotle pepper added to the cashew base. They give it a rich, tangy, full-bodied, and warm (medium heat) flavor with an earthy, yet luxurious vibe. The potent flavors of the Smoke & Spicy are amazing with crackers but can also make a simple pasta dish shine.

    Black Pepper Aged Artisan Cheese

This tasty selection has a modest amount of ground black pepper is added for subtle spice throughout. But the whole peppercorns that generously dot the outside of the cheese round pack a potent punch. Though I must admit to preferring mellower, earthy notes of the Spirulean and the pungent warmth of the Smoke & Spicy, the Black Pepper offers unique versatility for adding oomph to recipes and bold interest to a cheese platter.

VeganSun Artisan Cheeses are sold refrigerated, next to other dairy-free cheese alternatives in natural food stores. But if you have trouble locating, they do a fantastic job with cold shipping direct to customers (see their website below, or look for them on your favorite vegan online grocer).
