Enjoy Life Chocolate Protein Bites: Allergy-Friendly Truffle Snacks

9

Updated 2018! Last year, I shared the official release of Enjoy Life’s Proburst Bites followed by a full review. But those truffle-like snacks have recently undergone a big revamp. Two flavors have been retired, two new ones have come on board, and the whole line has been reformulated. And they are now called Enjoy Life Chocolate Protein Bites.

Review of Enjoy Life Chocolate Protein Bites

Finally, chocolate snacks that are made without dates and nuts! Don’t get me wrong, I love dates. But they seem to be in nearly every “bite” or bar on the market these days. Sometimes I just want chocolate without an overwhelming date flavor, and these bites deliver.

All of the Enjoy Life Chocolate Protein Bites flavors have a relatively soft chocolate middle enrobed in a somewhat thick dark chocolate shell and dotted with crushed seeds. The bites are about the size of a large truffle, and you get to enjoy three in a serving. One serving has around 160 calories, 10 grams of fat, 6 grams of protein, and 11 grams of sugars. They really are a treat, but with more nutrition than your average chocolate.

When they were known as ProBurst Bites, these had a somewhat dry, protein powdery finish. But Enjoy Life made a couple swaps for a smoother center. They switched to sunflower seed protein and they now use cocoa butter instead of palm oil. Each flavor now has a near seamless consistency and rich chocolate flavor. But each flavor is still quite individual.

Dipped Banana (New Flavor)

The thick outer chocolate shell houses a surprisingly smooth, soft and chewy center. It isn’t sticky chewy, but isn’t a melt-in-your-mouth softness either. Nevertheless, the texture melds well with the sweet banana infusion. And you just can’t go wrong with the flavor combination of chocolate and banana.

Ingredients – semisweet chocolate (unsweetened chocolate, cane sugar, cocoa butter), sunflower protein, sugar cane syrup (cane sugar, water), tapioca syrup, cocoa butter, roasted and salted pumpkin seeds (pumpkin seeds, safflower oil, salt), rice protein, cocoa powder, dried bananas, safflower oil, natural flavors, salt

Dark Raspberry (New Flavor)

This variety leans more toward the truffle side with a softer filling that’s just a touch chewy. The flavor is intensely raspberry with visible bits of actual dried raspberry. And the fruity flavor melds perfectly with the rich cocoa backdrop. I liked all of the textures and the fact that this flavor was indulgent but not too sweet.

Ingredients – semisweet chocolate (unsweetened chocolate, cane sugar, cocoa butter), sunflower protein, sugar cane syrup (cane sugar, water), tapioca syrup, cocoa butter, roasted and salted pumpkin seeds (pumpkin seeds, safflower oil, salt), rice protein, cocoa powder, dried raspberries, safflower oil, natural flavor, citric acid

Cinnamon Spice (New Formula)

The filling was definitely smoother than the prior formula and it wasn’t the least bit dry. Like the others, it’s quite soft with just a slight chew. The bright almost fruity chocolate provided the rich base, but warm bursts of cinnamon exploded with every bite. It was quite unique, but tasty, and a little more “snack like” than some of the other flavors.

Ingredients – semisweet chocolate (unsweetened chocolate, cane sugar, cocoa butter), sunflower protein, sugar cane syrup (cane sugar, water), tapioca syrup, cocoa butter, roasted and salted pumpkin seeds (pumpkin seeds, safflower oil, salt), rice protein, cocoa powder, safflower oil, cinnamon, natural flavors.

Sunseed Butter (New Formula)

Like the Cinnamon Spice, the filling shifted from dry to smooth and slightly chewy with this new formulation. The almost fruity chocolate melded very nicely with the creamy seed butter. Overall, it was very sweet, chocolaty, and decadent. I thought it even tasted a bit guilty! It was the richest of the bunch, and perhaps my favorite.

Ingredients – semisweet chocolate (unsweetened chocolate, cane sugar, cocoa butter), sugar cane syrup (cane sugar, water), sunflower protein, tapioca syrup, cocoa butter, roasted and salted pumpkin seeds (pumpkin seeds, safflower oil, salt), sunflower seed spread (roasted sunflower seeds, organic sugar, salt), rice protein, cocoa powder, natural flavor, salt.

  1. I gotta be honest, these aren’t my favorite Enjoy Life Product- I do like like the sunbutter ones, but to much chocolate tends to be a migraine trigger for me. However, I gave some to my husband and dad and they loved them! I really appreciate all your product reviews!

    • That’s a bummer Amanda. I seriously don’t blame you though – my sister has severe migraines and I always feel so badly for her when they hit. Glad they went over with the hubby okay though – no loss! 🙂

  2. I really like the rustic shapes of these bites. I bet it feels more healthy to eat something like that rather than a perfect truffle. The cinnamon kinds sounds like it would be my favourite.
