Enjoy Life Chocolate Protein Bites are Making Allergy-Friendly Mainstream

9

A few of years ago, I shared the official release of Enjoy Life’s Proburst Bites followed by a full review. Since that time, those truffle-like snacks have undergone quite a few changes. They’ve had a formula makeover to remove the palm oil and improve the taste. With that recipe update, two flavors were retired but a new flavor was brought on board, and they changed the name to Enjoy Life Chocolate Protein Bites. Consumers responded with overwhelming delight.

More recently, Enjoy Life added Grab & Go single serve packs of their Protein Bites, which has dramatically improved distribution. In fact, you can now find two flavors at Trader Joe’s, a popular grocery chain that rarely takes on branded products. Trader Joe’s took on the SunSeed flavor earlier this year, and it did so well that they’ve also added the Dipped Banana flavor of Enjoy Life Protein Bites to their shelves nationwide.

Enjoy Life Chocolate Protein Bites are Making Allergy-Friendly Mainstream

Enjoy Life is a people-pleasing company. They are constantly listening and jotting down ideas. As a result, their products are constantly undergoing formula improvement (seriously, I have trouble keeping up!), and they are always adding to the quality. Just take a look at all of the product certifications on listed below – I didn’t even realize some of these existed! Nevertheless, I have updated this post to include the latest and greatest on these top 14 (yes 14!) allergen-free protein bites.

All of the Enjoy Life Chocolate Protein Bites flavors have a relatively soft chocolate middle enrobed in a somewhat thick dark chocolate shell and dotted with crushed seeds. When they were known as ProBurst Bites, these had a somewhat dry, protein powdery finish. But Enjoy Life made a couple swaps for a smoother center. They switched to sunflower seed protein and they now use cocoa butter instead of palm oil. Each current variety has a rich chocolate taste, but with their own individual flavor twist.

Dipped Banana

The thick outer chocolate shell houses a surprisingly smooth, soft and chewy chocolate center with a sweet banana infusion. It isn’t sticky chewy, but isn’t a melt-in-your-mouth softness either.

Ingredients: semisweet chocolate (unsweetened chocolate, cane sugar, cocoa butter), sunflower protein, sugar cane syrup (cane sugar, water), tapioca syrup, cocoa butter, roasted and salted pumpkin seeds (pumpkin seeds, safflower oil, salt), rice protein, cocoa powder, dried bananas, safflower oil, natural flavors, salt.*

Nutrition (per 3 pieces): 160 calories, 10g fat, 17g carbs, 1g fiber, 11g sugars, 6g protein.*

Dark Raspberry

This variety leans more toward the truffle side with a softer chocolate filling that’s just a touch chewy. The flavor is intensely raspberry with visible bits of actual dried raspberry, but it isn’t super sweet.

Ingredients: semisweet chocolate (unsweetened chocolate, cane sugar, cocoa butter), sunflower protein, sugar cane syrup (cane sugar, water), tapioca syrup, cocoa butter, roasted and salted pumpkin seeds (pumpkin seeds, safflower oil, salt), rice protein, cocoa powder, dried raspberries, safflower oil, natural flavor, citric acid.*

Nutrition (per 3 pieces): 170 calories, 10g fat, 17g carbs, 2g fiber, 11g sugars, 6g protein.*

Cinnamon Spice

The filling was definitely smoother than the prior formula and it wasn’t the least bit dry. Like the others, it’s quite soft with just a slight chew. But it has a bright, almost fruity chocolate base with a warm cinnamon infusion.

Ingredients: semisweet chocolate (unsweetened chocolate, cane sugar, cocoa butter), sunflower protein, sugar cane syrup (cane sugar, water), tapioca syrup, cocoa butter, roasted and salted pumpkin seeds (pumpkin seeds, safflower oil, salt), rice protein, cocoa powder, safflower oil, cinnamon, natural flavors.

Nutrition (per 3 pieces): 160 calories, 10g fat, 17g carbs, 1g fiber, 11g sugars, 6g protein.*

Sunseed Butter

Like the Cinnamon Spice, the filling shifted from dry to smooth and slightly chewy with the reformulation. It’s sweet, chocolaty, and decadent with the creamy flavor of seed butter.

Ingredients: semisweet chocolate (unsweetened chocolate, cane sugar, cocoa butter), sugar cane syrup (cane sugar, water), sunflower protein, tapioca syrup, cocoa butter, roasted and salted pumpkin seeds (pumpkin seeds, safflower oil, salt), sunflower seed spread (roasted sunflower seeds, organic sugar, salt), rice protein, cocoa powder, natural flavor, salt.

Nutrition (per 3 pieces): 170 calories, 11g fat, 17g carbs, 1g fiber, 11g sugars, 6g protein.*

Great Protein Snack!

My 13 yo daughter loves these protein bites! We stumbled across the single serve packs in Trader Joes about 6 months ago. Our local store carries the Sunseed Butter flavor and now recently they started offering the Dipped Banana flavor and she loves them both. They are an indulgent little snack but one that also provides protein, which I love. The single serve packs are perfect for after school or before she does her training workouts or volleyball practice. They are also great to pack on trips or take with us when we are going somewhere that we are unsure if there will be dairy free snacks, as my daughter has a life threatening allergy to dairy. We are always looking for tasty protein snack choices and Enjoy Life certainly delivered with these!

Great afternoon pick-me-up!

Finally, chocolate snacks that are made without dates and nuts! Don’t get me wrong, I love dates. But they seem to be in nearly every “bite” or bar on the market these days. Sometimes I just want chocolate without an overwhelming date flavor, and these deliver. My favorite is the SunSeed which taste a little more dessert like than the others with some richness from the seed butter. I also really liked the warm bursts of spice in every bite of the Cinnamon. Both flavors are great with tea for some midday energy. The Banana and Raspberry are good, too, I’m just not as big on fruit and chocolate together. I would personally love it if the centers weren’t chewy at all, but realize that texture balance can be tricky with added protein. They do a pretty good job!

  1. I gotta be honest, these aren’t my favorite Enjoy Life Product- I do like like the sunbutter ones, but to much chocolate tends to be a migraine trigger for me. However, I gave some to my husband and dad and they loved them! I really appreciate all your product reviews!

    • That’s a bummer Amanda. I seriously don’t blame you though – my sister has severe migraines and I always feel so badly for her when they hit. Glad they went over with the hubby okay though – no loss! 🙂

  2. I really like the rustic shapes of these bites. I bet it feels more healthy to eat something like that rather than a perfect truffle. The cinnamon kinds sounds like it would be my favourite.
