Much has changed over the years, so it’s time to update my review of Enjoy Life Soft Baked Cookies!
I’m a professed cookie-holic. Given the choice of cake, pie, or cookies, the choice would always be obvious for me. Nonetheless, I am quite picky about the texture of my cookie. Too cakey is a bore. Too dry, and well lets just say shortbread is not high on my hit list. Each morsel must be tender, soft and chewy.
Tasting Notes for Enjoy Life Soft Baked Cookies
Enjoy Life Soft Baked Cookies possess a consistency that I absolutely adore. They don’t offer a melt-in your-mouth chocolate chip cookie kind of experience. Rather, these cookies had a sweet and hearty flavor that hinted at a snack instead of an indulgent dessert. This was a dangerous thing to say the least, as I found myself throwing back three or four with no remorse. Nonetheless, they were definitely a cookie, with that sweet taste, and the texture that I long for.
Housed in their own neat and tidy tray, the packaging for these cookies was obviously well planned. As I opened the box, the scent of pure chocolate chip cookies emerged. Upon first bite, I was welcomed by the true soft and chewy nature of these cookies (more soft than chewy). The size was petite, yet somewhat tall and puffy to compensate. The chocolate chips were tiny but provide tasty little bursts.
Though distinctively different from your ordinary tollhouse variety, Enjoy Life’s cookies are quite tasty. A strange, almost licorice-like aftertaste was the only thing that I found slightly off-putting. Yet, it certainly didn’t prevent me from carrying on with another cookie. Before sneaking a peek at the ingredients, I guessed that they contained maple syrup or some other fluid sweetener, but I was quite wrong. Fruit juice concentrates, evaporated cane juice, and dates contributed to the cookie-like sweetness.
I would be lying if I said the date flavor was totally unnoticeable. After all, I don’t want a super-date taster coming after me. Plus, the dates may have contributed to that “off” taste I noted. But, overall, the flavor really did work with these cookies, and the dates were far less obvious than in a Larabar or Clif Nectar bar, for example. These were REAL cookies.
Alas, the Snickerdoodles did not meet with such a wonderful packaging fate. Lodged in a plastic enclosure that allowed the cookies to commingle, several of the cookies smooshed tightly together. Looking on the positive side, I took this as a sign of their soft and chewy nature. As luck would have it, my optimism was rewarded. Each cookie pulled apart with an almost bread-like appearance, which I found that much more alluring. The texture was seriously soft and chewy, up a notch from the chocolate chip variety.
In terms of taste, I could definitely detect the snickerdoodle vibe, but these almost seemed better! The Enjoy Life version was more like a Snickerdoodle crossed with a soft and chewy sugar cookie. A good jolt of cinnamon and sugar coated each cookie in entirety – a big plus for this sugar and spice fan.
I quite enjoyed the alternative flours, which gave this Enjoy Life cookie a heartier taste and texture. While the dates were actually more prevalent in this variety, they seemed to meld better for a very uniform flavor that possessed no oddities. I could realistically develop a serious addiction to these little gems. However, those who like fluffy white cookies and dry shortbread should be warned. Each delicious bite is all-natural, with a wholesome flair to match.
Oh yeah, these Enjoy Life Soft Baked Cookies are pure brownie goodness, spiked with oodles of mini chocolate chips. Of course, Tony selected this as his favorite flavor. My loyalties still lie with the Snickerdoodles, but darn, these soft and wonderfully rich little cookies are a very, very close second.
Hannah trialed them, too, and noted that they aren’t deeply chocolaty and she thought they were lighter than your average brownie. “Easy to eat and enjoy” she said, after devouring half a package.
I haven’t yet trialed these Enjoy Life Soft Baked Cookies, but Hannah has and was happy to weigh in.
Upon first breaking the seal containing the smooth, half-rounded domes, they elicited a pungent whiff of molasses and spices – A very good thing indeed. It was a little bit off-putting when I tried to remove one and found that it was very solidly stuck to the cookie behind it. I suppose they’re so moist that they adhere to one another after they’ve been in contact for a certain period of time. Or maybe some extra moisture got into my container. Either way, I pried them free and used the top one for photographing.
Briefly heating, I broke my prey into two, I saw that the texture was the same as the snickerdoodle I had tried earlier – Very soft and sporting a fine crumb, almost like a cake. On my first bite, I was a bit under whelmed with the flavor after having been assaulted by such intense smells. It didn’t quite “melt” as the other one did, but the texture definitely suited it perfectly, and I felt that it was spot on with the ginger bread it was attempting to replicate.
I tried a second one, this time without nuking it in the microwave, and found that the taste was actually better this way. Now it exhibited all of the moist properties I imagined it to have when trying to separate each cookie from the others. So rich and indulgent tasting, I couldn’t believe how healthy these actually were! Although I was disappointed at first, they definitely lived up to my high expectations. I love all things spiced, so this one seems like it was made for me.
