So Delicious Coconut Milk Beverage is an Organic Dairy-Free Staple

By Alisa Fleming on January 3, 2020 Dairy-Free Milk Substitute Reviews, Product Reviews

So what is coconut milk beverage? Coconut is confusing because so many recipe creators throw around the term “coconut milk” for various products. Regular coconut milk comes in a can and is very high in fat. It works as a great substitute for milk and cream. But coconut milk beverage (mistakenly written just as coconut milk sometimes) is a drinkable version of coconut milk – basically, it’s been watered down and emulsified. You can use it in place of dairy milk on cereal and in recipes. I buy and use the Unsweetened So Delicious Coconut Milk Beverage to test recipes quite often, but they have several varieties available.

So Delicious Coconut Milk Beverage isn’t new, but it’s been a decade since we first posted about it! So today, I’m updating this post with our new information and review format (you can leave your own rating and review below), plus the current varieties.

So Delicious Coconut Milk Beverage is an Organic Dairy-Free Staple

Sometimes it’s seamless in recipes, but straight up, this beverage does have a coconut vibe. The Vanilla and Chocolate varieties are less overtly coconut, but still have a subtle influence. Tell us if you like this product by leaving your own rating and review below. It helps others make an informed purchasing decision.

We have gotten organic coconut unsweetened milk for years. The last two or three containers have been extremely thick and foamy. So weird- we don’t like it in our cereal now. Is it a bad batch??

    Response from Go Dairy Free

I would assume it is a bad batch. The batches are large, so it could take a month or two to work through. Bummer! This is the milk beverage I like to test recipes with!

    Not consistent

I’ve been buying the shelf stable version for a while. I have it with my cereal and I cook with it. Today I opened a new carton of refrigerated unsweetened, poured it in my cereal and it just sat on top! I tasted it,it seems ok. Like its not bad, but its so thick. This is the first time I’ve had that problem.

    Became thick and grainy

    Rated 2 out of 5
    March 2, 2021

When I first opened the unsweetened plain, it seemed to pour normally. But after two days of being open I used it on cereal and it was so thick it sat on top of my cereal! (and I did shake it). It had visible graininess (like coconut pieces) around the side of my bowl. The texture was gelatinous like. Not a fan and won’t buy again.

First time ever tasting any type of coconut milk “ beverage “. It is quite awful. Bitter and tasteless. Watery, too. I don’t understand when others say it thick and goopy.

    Where's the COCONUT!

    Rated 1 out of 5

I’ve never been a fan of milk (even as a child). As an adult, later in life, I became lactose intolerant. Anyone who knows me knows that I LOVE COCONUT. I’ve tried many brands of coconut milk and thought I would try SO Delicious. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed when I tasted this semi-thick white liquid with mini specks of what appeared to be real coconut that tastes NOTHING like coconut. It was like drinking think watery tasting liquid. Kind of gross. I’ve had much better.

    Way Too Thick

    Rated 1 out of 5
    November 14, 2020

I agree this is way too thick to be called a dairy free milk. At best, it is a coconut cream without the coconutty flavor of a cream. Unpalatable texture. If you water it down just to be able to use it on cereal or in a latte, you lose the flavor.

This is unnaturally thick. I thought it was bad! I don’t think it is bad….I had it with my cereal but throwing it down the drain. ☹️ Won’t buy this again!! I guess I got a bad batch too 3 months later!

I really enjoy this coconut beverage. I like that it is fortified and doesn’t contain soy, rice, oats, or sunflowers. (These are things my daughter reacts to.)

does coconut milk curdle when heated. Is it ok for making coffee?

      • Alisa Fleming on June 27, 2014 12:32 pm

        Hi David,

It’s important to differentiate here between coconut milk and coconut milk beverage (which I think is what you are referring to). Coconut milk is very fatty, like heavy cream, and usually sold in cans or small aseptic packages. I know a lot of people who use it to make their own creamer – it seems to hold its own in hot beverages. Coconut milk beverage is thinned to be more like 2% dairy milk in consistency. It curdles significantly when an acid is added (lemon, vinegar, etc.) and I do find that it curdles a little bit in hot beverages. I haven’t trialed it specifically in coffee.
