Planet Oat Oatmilk has always been a low sugar brand, and most of their flavors have “no added sugars” (see note below). But a few grams of sugars are produced in the processing of the oats. So they’ve launched two new “Unsweetened” varieties that each contain zero grams of total sugar to help meet every need.
When Planet Oat Oatmilk was first released, you might have thought this was a fledgling company, but it is produced by HP Hood. They’re a $2 billion, 170-year old dairy, and one of the largest food and beverage companies in the U.S. Like so many other dairy producers, HP Hood jumped into the fast-growing, non-dairy market. But unlike many of their competitors, it looks like they got it right the first time. Planet Oat Oatmilk has been met with rave reviews for it’s creamy consistency, fortification, performance in coffee, and naturally low-sugar taste.
Planet Oat Oatmilk Doubles Down on Low Sugar with New Unsweetened
Aside from the dark chocolate, all of the Planet Oat Oatmilk varieties are made without any added sugars (see note below). As mentioned, an enzymatic process used to make oatmilk (so it isn’t goopy like homemade versions!) breaks some of the carbohydrates down into sugars. So they aren’t sugar-free, but do not have any sugars added to the ingredients. Now, somehow, Planet Oat has managed to remove those last traces of oat sugar in their new, sugar-free, unsweetened varieties. And like their other flavors, these cartons are also generously fortified with vitamins and minerals.

Added Sugar in Planet Oat Oatmilk
It looks like some in-store cartons are now showing 4 grams of added sugars in the Extra Creamy, Original, and Vanilla varieties, despite no change in the total sugars, formula, or information on Planet Oat’s website. There was a ruling that oat milk companies must disclose “oat sugar” created during the production of oat milk (they use an enzymatic process that breaks some of the oat down into simpler carbohydrates), as added sugars. We assume that’s why cartons in store seem to have “added sugars” now. So technically, there still aren’t any types of sugar added to the formula, but sugar is created in the processing.

Oat Water not Oat Milk
I hate to give bad reviews and I usually research a product before purchasing, but I just ran to the store to grab a box of Raisin Bran and some Oat Milk and this was the only brand name that this particular store sold. So I really had no choice. As many have said compared to other brands it is very very watery. It’s not creamy and it’s too watery. I’m going to inquire tomorrow about getting my $4.00 back so I can go purchase a brand that I know that I like and would not go to waste. Do better. And just an FYI it is smaller than a half gallon.
Kaopectate
This is my first time buying this brand. I bought 3 flavors because they were on sale.
The worse flavor is the vanilla, it tastes like Kaopectate. I won’t ever buy again.
Super Watery
This is by far the worst oat milk I’ve ever had. I tried it a while ago and hated it in my coffee but figured I’d try it again with cereal and to make strawberry milk. I was once again disappointed. It’s very watered down. Oatly remains the best oat milk on the market.
Container Size
Has there been an explanation from Planet Oat why their container size is smaller than the competitors? Planet Oat’s container is 19% smaller than a half gallon. Be careful when you compare pricing against brands using a full half-gallon. Good product inside the container. Deceiving packaging.
Looks like dish water
I am sorry to report that it looks like dishwater. No matter how much shaking I did. The taste was ok, but I won’t buy it again.
Delicious
I’m hooked on the original.
Don’t forget to shake it each time you use it.
Too watery
The milk was way too watery and I couldn’t use it for coffee, cereal or anything. It looks like water and is slightly white in color. Was pretty upset with this purchase.
Amazing
This is my favorite milk substitute. I absolutely adore making lattes with this oat milk. My favorite nightly beverage is a cup of the dark chocolate oat milk warmed. It’s just as good as my homemade without all the mess. Thank you for a wonderful product. It has a full flavor. Performs well in my baking. I only have wonderful reviews.
Perfect!
I tried another oat milk that had oil and messed up my digestion. Switched to Planet Oat and now have a happy tummy. I also like the less sweet taste and the less thick consistence. Great flavor without tasting heavy.
Too watery
Tried this because the store didn’t have any of the two brands I use and like. I use it on cereal and it was so watery I thought it was a bad batch. But I see other reviews that also so it is very watery. Truly I could get the same effect by pouring water in my cereal. Disappointed.
