Amid their massive transition to be a completely carrageenan-free company, So Delicious is still launching some brand new products, including dairy free Almondmilk Beverages in standard and unique flavor variations.
For years, So Delicious has had a protein-pumped range of almond milk beverages, but they had yet to develop an “ordinary” line of almond milk beverages. Even if they’ve been unconventional in their product releases, I’m definitely excited to see this new line of everyday dairy free Almondmilk Beverages, made with just nuts, coconut (in one variety), cane sugar (just a bit in all but the Unsweetened), vitamin and mineral fortification (it’s high in Vitamins D and B12 and balanced in Calcium and Magnesium), and just a touch of natural flavors and gellan gum (the emulsifier).
All varieties of the So Delicious Dairy Free Almondmilk Beverages are relatively low in calories and sugars, but they each have their own unique flavor:
Walnut Blend – Intrigued, I jumped straight to the Almond-Walnut blend first. I was expecting bitter notes from the walnuts, but the nuttiness was actually rather mild, as if the almonds and walnuts cancelled one another out somehow. The flavor is clean and fresh with a light sweetness, mild nuttiness and the drinkable creaminess of 1% milk. The relatively neutral flavor (I think the scent is actually nuttier than the taste!) gives this one some great multi-purpose use – though I would shy away from some savories due to the slight touch of sweetness.
Coconut Blend – Tony thought this flavor was okay for cereal, and it passes in smoothies, but was the least favorite for both of us. The taste begins with a surprisingly sharp sweetness followed by more savory notes of almond and coconut together, which weren’t pleasing to me. It then ended with a flat, almost watery aftertaste.
Unsweetened – I could see this becoming my everyday milk beverage for smoothies, baking and sauces. It has a clean, gentle almond flavor that is mostly savory with nary a hint of natural sweetness. The consistency starts out nice and full, but it ends with a slightly flat, watery aftertaste – this certainly isn’t a problem for the way I use it, but it isn’t one that I would sip straight. Beyond healthy shakes, I did test it in homemade dairy-free mac and cheese and it worked quite nicely as the almond flavor seemed to be mild enough that it complimented rather than overwhelming the dish.
Vanilla – Continuing on the upswing, we both thought this flavor was quite good and different from other vanilla dairy free almondmilk beverages on the market. For starters, the vanilla flavor is subtle, rather than in-your-face, and there is a very mild sweetness in the background that adds delight but doesn’t make it “sweet” (just 3 grams of sugars!). This is a great fit for hot and cold cereals, smoothies, warm milk, or even making hot chocolate. As with the others, the flavor ends a touch flat / watery, but it wasn’t off-putting.
