So Delicious Coconut Milk Ice Cream still in 9 Decadent Dairy-Free Flavors

    20
By Alisa Fleming on June 17, 2020 Dairy-Free Ice Cream Reviews, Product Reviews

One of the best dairy-free creations has to be coconut milk ice cream. The coconut averse may not agree, since hints of coconut can sometimes be detected, but it’s hard to argue the creamy consistency of coconut-based frozen dessert. And So Delicious has been making one of the most popular dairy-free coconut milk ice cream lines for about a decade.

It’s apparent that many others concur, as the popularity and availability of coconut milk ice cream has skyrocketed over the years. Numerous brands are now available, and even So Delicious has expanded their selection of flavors. What started with just five delicious dairy-free coconut milk ice cream options, grew to a dozen different flavors of coconut milk ice cream. A few flavors have come and gone, but they’ve settled in with nine So Delicious Coconut Milk Ice Cream flavors, not including the No Sugar Added varieties. Today, we’re updating this post with our newer format and with the current flavors available.

So Delicious Coconut Milk Ice Cream in Several Decadent Dairy Free Flavors

I’ve included some of our unbiased tasting notes in this post. We haven’t tried every flavor, and you might have a different opinion. So feel free to leave your own rating and review at the end of this post. It helps others make an informed decision.

    Chocolate

The scoop slid with ease through what must be one of the creamiest non-dairy ice creams available. After shoveling several perfect, parlor-worthy scoops, Tony reached for the first bowl, and almost immediately proclaimed, “It tastes like a coconut fudgcicle!” He was so right. I really couldn’t imagine a better description.

    Vanilla Bean

I peeled back the lid of the vanilla pint to discover the purest shade of white I had ever laid eyes on in an “ice cream.” Most vanillas are a bit yellowed, but this looked like a cloud of whipped cream with natural vanilla bean flecks; definitely inviting.

The vanilla had the same wonderful texture as the chocolate, but it was a bit softer. It was a mix of creamy and refreshing with a whipped finish. Yet, I never realized how “coconut” coconut milk really is until I tasted this vanilla. I would hesitate to call it just vanilla, but rather I might rename it vanilla-coconut.

    Oh-So Strawberry

    Mocha Almond Fudge

This coconut milk ice cream has such a bold coffee flavor that I wondered if we would get caffeine jitters. The texture was smooth and rich with generous chunks of nuts throughout and a subtle fudgy swirl that added a sweet, yet intense, chocolate syrup vibe. Coffee and mocha lovers shall rejoice.

    Mint Chip

Pictured: Mint ChipIngredients: organic coconutmilk (filtered water, organic coconut), organic cane sugar, organic coconut oil, chocolate chips (cane sugar, organic coconut oil, cocoa, chocolate liquor, natural vanilla flavor), organic tapioca syrup, pea protein, locust bean gum, guar gum, natural mint flavor. contains: coconut.

    Cookie Dough

We thought the ice cream portion was good. It had a smooth and creamy texture that was rich and luxurious on the tongue. And the cookie dough was not only scrumptious, but generous. HUGE gobs of gluten-free cookie dough were abundantly scattered throughout this So Delicious pint. Tony said he could have eaten a bowl of the cookie dough portion alone. But both Tony and I felt the coconut vibe wasn’t a 100% fit with the cookie dough. It didn’t detract from it , but the two didn’t completely meld.

Nutrition (per 2/3 cup): 270 calories, 15g fat, 33g carbs, 2g fiber, 24g sugars (includes 24g added sugars), 2g protein.*

    Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl

The peanut butter flavor seemed mild, not standing on its own, but rather merging with the chocolate. I really enjoyed this decadent flavor, and liked that it didn’t taste notably coconut. But I can only eat chocolate desserts in small amounts, and this intensely chocolate ice cream was no exception.

    Coconut Macaroon

This flavor is for true coconut fans, or for making perfect pina coladas. It’s pure coconut on coconut. Though a bit thicker than the vanilla, it was still insanely soft and creamy, with giant shreds of coconut throughout.

Although the flavor pictured below is discontinued, I’ve left the image because it’s the best one I have for showing the consistency of So Delicious Coconut Milk Ice Cream.

    I love ice cream!

I was so skeptical because I am such a fan of real ice cream. I bought the mint chocolate chip and it was amazing. Not at all what I was expecting and I will continue to buy my new treat, So Delicious!

Dreamy is the word to describe the consistency

Dreamy is the word to describe the consistency of this coconut milk-based ice cream. The more simplistic flavors do have distinctive notes of coconut (i.e. Chocolate and Vanilla), but the bolder selections drown out these undertones with coffee, peanut butter, or tropical fruit. As coconut fans, we enjoyed the mono-lined flavors and had a true appreciation for the natural intensity of the Coconut flavor.

I was given the dreaded diagnosis of severe allergies to milk, wheat and yeast in August of 2017 and I have always loved ice cream but when I ate it I was feeling like I was getting a bad cold so I was sure I would never be able to eat ice cream again and then one day while the rest of my family was getting their ice cream I looked down the aisle and found SO Delicious and read the ingredients and was so happy to find that it was made with coconut milk so I tried it the cookie dough flavor was great then the next time I tried the Cherry Amaretto and the Salted Caramel Cluster made with Cashew milk. I am absolutely in love with this brand of dairy free ice cream!!!! I am able to eat this and have had no adverse affects! It is my treat every week and I am so happy a company understood that some people cannot have regular dairy products and made something that is really So Delicious!!!!!!!!

    2. Susan on September 27, 2017 9:25 pm

I am diabetic and vegan. I had given up eating anything resembling ice cream until I discovered So Delicious. When I eat it I get to have a guilt free treat. The Mint Chip is my favorite but I’m happy with the chocolate or vanilla also. I’ve heard there is butter pecan sugar free but it’s not stocked at Sprout’s where I shop.

I am really surprised by the positive comments. That their ice cream taste great, whether it’s regular sugar or the sugar free, yes it is very delicious.

What I didn’t count on was the extreme, and I mean extreme, inflammation that I got after eating their products. It was so bad that I couldn’t bear it. I looked up their ingredients list and lo and behold it had Carragean. I had no idea. Please do your own research, don’t trust me, but look up what Carragean is and what it does to your body. I had read about the effects of Carragean but didn’t really believe it until I experienced it firsthand. Now I know that it is an ingredient in which many organic products have as a preservative but it is highly inflammatory. Your body can’t digest it and I experienced it firsthand. Beware.

I know the people at this company are doing their best but they should really Heed the findings of how BAD Carragean is for you.

Just a warning to not eat too much like I did! It’s very delicious and a wonder option for dairy allergies.

    6. Jane Bernson on June 10, 2016 1:00 pm

Hi Jane, we’re not affiliated with So Delicious! I’m sure they would love your feedback on what the specific problem is. Their website is http://www.sodeliciousdairyfree.com.

My daughter has allergies to grain, oats, wheat, barley and eggs. Is there any risk with any of the brands.

      • Alisa Fleming on April 26, 2016 7:33 am

Hi Nika, you would need to contact the brand directly and discuss their manufacturing processes to decide if you consider a product safe for your daughter. I can’t advise on this.

    8. Jordan on May 11, 2015 5:19 pm

This ice cream is so good. I have had several different flavors, Chocolate, Vanilla, Mint, Cookie Dough, Cherry Amaretto, and Cookies and Cream. Every flavor I have tried has been excellent. My favorite flavors are the Cherry Amaretto and the Mint, but that is just my preference. One of the only things that makes this dessert different from non-dairy ice cream is that I have to set it out for 5-10 minutes before I eat it to soften it slightly. This is one of the best dairy free desserts that I have had.

      • Alisa Fleming on May 11, 2015 5:53 pm

Thanks for sharing your favorite Jordan! It’s been too long since I’ve had that Cherry Amaretto.

    9. Deborah Moore on March 17, 2015 4:12 pm

I think it’s named well ” frozen dessert” because it’s good but I don’t really get ice cream, maybe ice milk but really it’s just a good, cold, expensive! treat. I had cookie dough and I’ll try another.

    10. shaunie on July 30, 2014 10:18 am

the coconut is very good but extremely sweet. If you love extremely sweet then this is great. If you love little sweet you may find it too sweet. Very smooth and great quality.

    11. karyn on July 28, 2014 10:16 pm

I was nursing and had to go diary free. I was so bummed to give up ice cream then I found this ice cream. Its amazing and satisfied my craving!

    12. Maggie on July 28, 2014 10:26 am

i tried the chocolate flavor and it was amaaaazing, i cant wait to buy some more! I am so glad that this non dairy icecream is also soy free. I love everything about coconuts 😀

    14. Brian on July 22, 2014 6:53 pm

My wife (allergic to whey) loves the chocolate variety. She was so depressed when she was diagnosed, until she found this ice cream.

    15. Elizabeth on July 22, 2014 7:52 am

Had to go dairy free for the baby and was so happy to find a cow’s milk alternative ice cream that was actually well, really good! The chocolate flavor is my favorite and I found it to also be the least coconut-y of the bunch, too.

      • Alisa Fleming on July 22, 2014 8:07 am

Yes, the chocolate seems to take control, doesn’t it? Thanks for sharing your opinion Elizabeth!
