Carnation Almond Cooking Milk is a Creamy Dairy-Free Sub for Recipes

The baking aisle is beginning to boom with dairy alternatives, but Nestle was one of the first on the scene with Carnation Almond Cooking Milk. They launched it as a “substitute for drinking milk in both sweet and savory recipes,” but it’s quite creamy and more versatile than this tagline suggests. Many readers report that it’s the perfect substitute for evaporated milk or light cream, and some even use it regularly in place of heavy cream. It might even be perfect for making dairy-free eggnog.

This has been a joy for cooking. I used it to make pumpkin pie, and no one could tell the difference. I substitute it for anything that calls for cream or evaporated milk. It does separate if used as a coffee creamer. I used to be able to find it at many stores. Now I only seem to find it at Walmart or Does anyone know if I can freeze it? I tend to stock up because I fear it being discontinued.

Response from Go Dairy Free

I’m not sure how well it would freeze since it does have ingredients that can separate from freezing. You can try one and see how it works out. They should have a decent shelf-life though.

Cooking for my dairy free husband has always been a challenge. There are certain dishes that I just hadn’t been able to adjust to dairy free. I had just about given up on many creamy dishes until I found Carnation Almond Cooking Milk. This has a thick, smooth texture that reminds me of heavy cream, I substitute it for cream and have gotten good results.
