Food Allergy Awareness Week

Beyond our usual “free-from” and vegan line-up, from May 13 to May 19, in honor of Food Allergy Awareness Week, the front page will feature food allergy news, recipes, product reviews and more.  Check back as our features will change daily, and you can expect to see an assortment of offerings free-from dairy, eggs, gluten, tree nuts, peanuts, and other top allergens.  Of course, these aren’t just for the food allergic, but rather “safe” foods and information that everyone can share.

Food Allergy WeekIt is estimated that 12 million Americans live with food allergies.  Millions more have food intolerances and sensitivities.  It is difficult for those who can freely eat all foods to understand the threats that foods can pose to others.  The symptoms range from discomfort to life threatening.  In fact, food allergies are responsible for more than 30,000 emergency room visits each year, in the U.S. alone.

To create more awareness of something she deals with daily, Emily Marr, a high school junior, lobbied for national movement, which has culminated into the dedicated week.  It is essential that everyone understands the threats of food allergies, and learns to be considerate of those around them.

We hope that the foods and recipes we feature on Go Dairy Free this week will offer delicious ideas that can be served to those with food allergies, but enjoyed by all!
